Stay Strong in a Weak Economy

Every single day millions of people are handed a pink slip at work and told they are no longer needed. In this slow economy, companies are terminating or laying-off more people than ever before. Long time employees are now finding themselves in the unemployment line wondering how they are going to pay their bills.

Many are looking to Washington DC to solve the problem and hoping that more jobs will be created in the near future. But we are living in the present not the future and people need jobs now. So, where can a person go to find a job in a weak economy? Or, are there any businesses a person can start that will do well in a week economy? Here's a list of five companies that often do well when the economy doesn't.

Business: 5 Companies that Thrive in a Weak Economy
Help Wanted

Computer, ATM, and Office Machine Repair Technician

These technicians repair, install and maintain machines used by businesses and households. A college degree is not required for entry level positions, however, many employees obtain a postsecondary degree or certificate to gain the specific electronics knowledge necessary. Communication and customer service skills aid a technician as he/she must interact with customers. Strong communication and customer service skills are important because computer, ATM, and office machine repairers must interact with customers to figure out what needs to be repaired.

The electronics store, Best Buy's popular "Geek Squad" is a computer repair company that does well in any economy.

Hair Salons/Barbershops

The Census Bureau revealed a jump of approximately 8% in 2008 - 2009, during a downward economy, in hair salon and barbershop businesses and an increase in the number of people working as hairdressers and barbers. In Washington DC that number increased to 18%.

One reason for the booming business in a slow economy is that people are hard-pressed to give-up the expense of a haircut or perhaps they feel they need to look good for job interviews. In addition, people are flocking to the hair care industry for jobs. Individuals can enter this career as a shampooer with no formal education and then attend classes and obtain a license to provide hair care.

Pawn Broker

A pawn broker provides loans to people in exchange for their personal property which is used as collateral, or they purchase personal property to resell. When an item is pawned, the customer is loaned an amount of money negotiated between the pawn broker and the customer, and he/she is required to repay the loan with interest within a certain period of time or the item becomes the property of the pawnbroker. One reason this occupation does so well in a week economy is that people who need money quickly, for emergency situations or other reasons, will sell personal items at a price substantially less than the value in order to secure cash.

Recruiters/Job Search Agency

The number one thing people want during a slow economy is a job and so many turn to job-search agencies to assist them in finding employment. A recruiter acts as the middleman between a company and a potential employee. Many agencies do not charge the people seeking employment and instead get paid by the companies. One of the reasons employment agencies do well in a bad economy is that companies are looking to hire the best qualified employees for their limited positions and the number of unemployed potential employees looking for jobs is high.

Security Firm

As the economy dips crime rises and thus companies seek to hire security firms or to add to the number of security officers currently employed. In addition to securing a company’s location and goods, security firms offer additional services such as background checks of potential employees.

Most states require guards to be licensed and have a high school diploma or GED, and gaming surveillance officers may require additional coursework beyond a high school diploma.

If you're looking for a job in a slow economy try one of these five companies that thrive in a weak economy.

A very interesting analysis--I think what is so often overlooked when it comes unemployment is population growth + overseas manufacturing + government's cosntant enttrance into private enterprise...The three diminished the effectiveness of entrepreneurism and in the end reduces the job market. 2 thumbs up for your article and a rating.
