Business Law is a subject taught at both the collegiate and professional levels. The subject is oftentimes presented in more of an introductory style for undergraduate programs, with economics, business, finance, and management departments offering this course for their students. At a higher educational level, specifically within the requirements for law school, the subject of Business Law is divided into numerous specialized courses. Business Law courses cover a wide array of legal situations and laws that apply to the realm of personal, commercial, and more recently, online business.

Business Law is a great course for students to take, as it covers applicable, real-world topics. It is very understandable that law students are required to take specialized courses in Business Law, as they are studying for a profession that deals with very specific legal situations on a daily basis; however, having a general background in law is also extremely helpful for all individuals, not only those working in law, business, and finance, but also those looking to become more informed about their legal decisions in every day life.

Contracts, bankruptcy, antitrust, dispute resolution, employment law, international trade law, and legal structure are just some of the topics that are covered in Business Law. For this reason, institutions of higher education, such as law schools, break Business Law into specialty courses that focus on only one Business Law topic each.

Depending on how a lawyer decides to specialize, he or she may take numerous contract law courses, learning as much as possible about that topic, or may similarly choose to focus on learning in depth about legal structure instead. As with any profession, course requirements will vary significantly depending upon the individual's occupation and specialty of choice.

Although many of the subjects presented in Business Law have existed for years, legal cases are constantly being heard, and the law is being developed and adapted on a daily basis. New laws dealing with online commerce are frequently emerging, making Business Law an even more essential part of understanding the legal world of today.

People pursuing careers in law, finance, science, mathematics, health, business, and the arts can all benefit greatly from taking a general Business Law course.
