Buy Stained Glass - Three Types to Consider

By Edited Sep 13, 2015 0 1

Many people buy stained glass to decorate their homes. It makes gorgeous windows, fireplace panels, lamps and light fixtures. It can also be used as beautiful sun catchers. The three types of stained glass are brass, copper foiled and leaded. When buying stained glass, it is important to know the difference between the three types that are available to purchase. There are pros and cons to each type and it is important to know what kind of quality you are getting.

Brass Style

Brass style is the least expensive but it is also the lowest quality. The most common use of brass is in individual homes and condominiums. If it is not properly secured, the glass will rattle when placed in windows and doors. Brass looks great as a suncatcher. The buyer must understand when they buy brass style stained glass that it is a poor quality and may break easily.

Copper Foiled

Copper foiled or Tiffany style stained glass is an expensive type of glass. It is very strong and is known for its quality and detail. Every individual piece of glass is wrapped with copper and soldered together. Other panels of stained glass are soldered as one solid piece of glass. Soldering each individual piece of glass can be painstakingly tedious. This is what makes copper foiled so expensive. Most antique stained is Tiffany style glass. Tiffany stained glass lamps are popular among antique collectors as well as Tiffany style sun catchers and light fixtures.

Leaded Style

The most common type is lead style. It is often used in commercial buildings such as churches. It is very durable and is reasonably priced. If leaded style is not secured correctly, the lead may stretch out causing the glass to look deformed. Those who want to buy this product and is looking for good quality at a reasonable price should choose leaded style.

Faux stained glass film can be an inexpensive option for those looking to buy stained glass. It gives the same look of stained glass but is much cheaper. If the look gets old, the faux film can be peeled off the window. Faux stained glass is an excellent stained glass option for renters.

When you go shopping for this type of product, consider which type fits in to your budget and if that type offers the quality you are looking for. It is important to do your research before heading to the store. These are some of the many options to consider when looking to buy stained glass.
