Buying An HDTV: A College Student's Guide

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

If you're going to be moving to college here soon, you're probably thinking about how you can set up your new dorm room. If you're anything like me, one of the chief items you'll want to have is a good, solid TV.

Not just any TV, though, an HDTV. Sure, standard def TVs work and all, but with the wide availability of high quality, high definition video, stepping back in time to a standard def set is hard. You want your new dorm to have an HDTV.

However, HDTVs are expensive, as you will soon find out when you start shopping for one. There is no getting around this, but there are a few ways you can try to save some money when buying a TV for your dorm.

First of all, get a smaller TV. You room will likely be quite small, so getting a huge 46" model is just a silly waste of money. Looking into smaller HDTV models will save you a lot of money, so be sure not to buy any bigger than you need.

Another way to save money on your dorm room HDTV is to look for open box specials at large electronics retailers. You can get some good deals on many different types of TVs by finding the right open box special.

Once you have your TV, you will want some content. Your dorm probably has some sort of cable TV package in place. Hopefully this includes some sort of HD channels. If it doesn't, you'll have to set up a regular digital antennae to get broadcast channels. A Blu Ray player will allow you to watch high definition movies. If you get a Playstation 3, you will be getting a good game console and a Blu Ray player all in one. Something to think about if you like gaming.

Be sure to insure your electronics in the event of theft, which does happen from time to time in form environments. However, this shouldn't be a huge worry. Enjoy your college experience and your new HDTV!
