Buying a Cheap Tattoo Kit to Get Started

By | Feb 19, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

There is no simple trick or path to becoming a tattoo artist in the way there is for most other careers. The maxim "go to school and get a job" doesn't apply to the tattoo world quite so easily! How does one get the proverbial "foot in the door" then when it comes to tattooing?

Often breaking into the industry takes a combination of persistence, lots of hard work, patience, effective networking, and probably a little luck along the way, too. One of the best ways to become a tattoo artist is to work under the wing of an established tattooing artist. This artist will become the acting mentor and train the tattooist in the skills of trade, along with probably having him or her maintain the premises, cleaning floors and equipment and running the front desk sometimes, too.

But what about those who are unable to get into the position of interning or training directly underneath someone? The truth is those positions are few and far between. Most cities would be hard pressed to have more than a handful of interships open over the course of a year, and even that might be an exaggeration.

Buying a tattoo kit for under $100 and getting acquainted with the equipment itself is a fantastic way to take control of the situation and learn what you can, with what you can get. A tattoo kit containing the tattoo machine, a couple sets of tattooing needles, multiple bottles of ink, a power supply, and an assorted helpful odds and ends, such as gloves, ink caps, and so on - having these supplies makes for a great way to get comfortable with the equipment.

Taking that kind of initiative to learn the trade can also fare well for landing that internship, too. Just like any other type of situation in which a company is sizing up applicants, consider the advantages that confer upon those who have experience with the equipment because they bought a tattoo kit and learned how to use it, versus those who did nothing but apply and hope they get the job.
