Buying a Dishwasher
Back in the old days, people cleaned their dishes by hand with soap and water in a sink. Today, dishwashers are a common household appliance, and few people wash dishes by hand exclusively. A dishwasher saves a lot of time and energy, and it also adds to the value of a home. Selling a house with a dishwasher is much easier than one without. Dishwashers are diverse and come in many different types, sizes, and styles. There are also many different manufactureres today, and they all make dishwashers with slightly different features, so choosing a dishwasher can be tough. Here are some tips for planning for and buying a dishwasher.
First you should consider where you'll put your dishwasher, and what size you want. You need both plumbing and electrical hook ups, so you'll have to either plan for that or hire somebody to get your space ready. Size is the next factor. The dishwasher usually sits below the countertop, so this limits the size. The size of the dishwasher determines its capacity, so to be sure you can do an entire load of dishes, pots, and pans, you need to get the right size. Common sizes are 18" and 24". The former is good for a small family, while the latter is good for four or more people. There are many space saving dishwasher types on the market these days, so look in to those if space is tight for you. You might consider installing an under sink dishwasher. Also, countertop dishwashers are available.
Next, choose the features you want your dishwasher to have. Almost all models these days have two racks and a heated drying cycle. This is a huge time saver because you don't have to let the dishes dry overnight. Many dishwasher offer energy saving features, and also features which reduce the amount of water you need to use for a cycle. Fancier models have other features which you may not need if you are just looking for a basic model.
The last thing to consider is style. Dishwashers are available in pretty much any style you can think of, and you're sure to find one to match your kitchen. Whether it's a modern kitchen with sleek lines and a stainless steel dishwasher or a country kitchen with a wood veneer dishwasher, you can get an appliance that looks great in your kitchen. Pay attention to the controls. Many dishwashers have the controls and knobs on the outside top of the dishwasher door, but some are beginning to put these controls in the inside of the door where they can't be seen when the dishwasher is in use.
Buying a dishwasher is tough, but with a little work you can get a functional appliance that looks great in your kitchen.
