Chinchillas can make wonderful pets, they look cute and cuddly, but they don't take to handling by humans for too long a period. At the beginning, it will take a long while before the chinchilla will trust you enough to even let you hold it. For this trust to happen you must spend as much time in the same room with them as possible. Not only will this ensure that it becomes used to you as fast as possible, it will also make you aware of the chinchilla typical behavior. This is very important because if the chinchilla starts to show signs of illness, you will have more of a chance of spotting any symptoms.

Chinchilla's require special care and attention. This is not very difficult once you have bought the correct cage for your chinchilla. There is a certain environment which the chinchilla likes and you will have to buy or build your cage accordingly. The chinchilla comes from the Andes Mountains and so it naturally likes a cool temperature. It has no way of regulating its own body temperature so bearing this in mind you will have to purchase a cage for chinchilla comfort. Also, if you intend to breed your chinchillas, you must make sure of the suitability of your cage for chinchilla babies

Chinchillas spend most of their time in their cage environment so it's up to you to provide them with the necessary ingredients for a good life. You have to evaluate the room where you are going to put your chinchillas to be certain that it provides a good enough environment. Mostly this comes down to issues of keeping the chinchilla warm. You should try purchase a chinchilla cage which is as large as possible. This will give the chinchilla the freedom to move around. You should also purchase a cage for chinchilla climbing. The best type of cage for a chinchilla has twice the height as it does width. Parrot or weasel cages are sometimes used to great effect.

You should try to change the bedding in your chinchilla cage regularly, at least once a week. The bedding should consist of wood shavings or paper pulp. The most important areas to keep clean are around the water bottle and food tray. Chinchillas can become ill if there food and water become contaminated with bacteria from droppings or urine. The proper environment mixed with good care and attention will ensure a good home for your chinchilla.
