Camping at Abilene State Park

Camping can be a great way to save money on a vacation, since you can camp at most state and national parks for a nominal fee when compared to the nightly rate a hotel charges. Abilene State Park in Texas is one such park that does allow individuals, couples and families to camp for a small fee. You just need to make sure that you secure your spot to camp there by making a reservation.

Campers have the opportunity to choose from different types of campsites when making a reservation. Some campsites are primitive while others have water and electricity on-site. There is space for both tent and RV campers. In addition the park has three yurts, which are circular covered shelters featuring amenities such as furniture and a microwave.

Camping reservations can be made online through the website for the Abilene State Park in Texas. You are required to submit payment at the time you make the reservation, and this can be done with a Visa, MasterCard or Discover credit card.

If you don't feel comfortable entering your credit card information online, you do have the option to make a reservation using a fax. A reservation form is available for you to download, fill out and then fax to the park office at 512-389-8959. If the park is able to grant your request, a park reservation agent will contact you to take your payment information over the phone.

The third option for making a campsite reservation at Abilene State Park in Texas is by phone Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Make sure you have the dates you want to stay and your payment information in front of you before calling the park office at 512-389-8900 to make the reservation. Only phone reservations are allowed if it is within four days of the night you want to camp at the park.

Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance for camping at Abilene State Park. It is highly advised by the park office to make your reservations early if you plan to camp during a holiday as they are some of the busiest camping times at Abilene State Park.

There are a variety of activities to enjoy while camping at the park. Swimming is popular during the summer months as the water helps cool off during a hot summer day in Texas, and parents with small children can use the on-site wading pool. Outdoors there is also a hiking trail, playground area and sand volleyball pit as well as an open field area perfect for flying kits, playing a game of baseball or enjoying a good old-fashioned game of tag.

Activities aren't just limited to sports and recreation. Nature enthusiasts have the opportunity to see a variety of different wildlife and vegetation when visiting Abilene State Park. Raccoons, armadillos, foxes and white-tailed deer are popular animals in the park which contains prairie grass, wildflowers and a number of different types of trees. The park is also home to several different types of birds and fish which can be caught at Buffalo Willow Pond.
