Can I Get A Job With A Felony Conviction On My Record?

By Edited Jan 2, 2016 2 5

If you've made a mistake or two in the past, and are wondering, can I get a job with a felony on my record, you should know about some of the options you have. You are not disqualified from most positions, but it will be a little harder for you to find employment than the person with no past convictions, especially during these times with high unemployment. Still, there are plenty of places to work and things to do from improving your chances. Here's how you can get a job with a felony on your record. Give these methods a try, you may get to work sooner than you think.

Places to look:

Generally speaking, you can work just about anywhere, with only a few exceptions. While you shouldn't expect the top of the line positions, there are plenty of options out there. Some will typically yield better results. Here's where I would look, so I could get a job with a felony on my record.

1. Temporary employment services: These are good places to begin. You will likely get hired somewhere, giving you an opportunity to prove yourself. Many temporary employment agencies will work with you, despite your past incarceration. Best of all, if you prove yourself as a good worker, you may be able to land a full time position. Just keep telling yourself – I can get a job with a felony conviction on my record, but I have to prove myself.

2. Smaller companies. Many larger national companies will not hire those with a felony on their record, but some smaller companies are willing to give you a chance. Small companies are generally mom and pop type shops, and the owners are often more willing to give you a chance.

3. Factories and other unskilled labor. There may be hope at many factories and other unskilled labor places to work. This isn't an insult by any means. Getting a position, even if near the bottom of the ladder, will give you an opportunity to work your way up and prove yourself. If you're wondering, can I get a job with a felony conviction on my record, the answer is yes.

4. Check with government agencies. There are plenty of places out there that will help you re-enter the workforce. Often called community reentry programs, many only hire those that were recently incarcerated. This gives you a fresh start (in fact, fresh start is the name of our local agency that does just this), and teach you real skills. At many of these places, you will learn carpentry skills, which you can use down the road. Hold your head high, knowing you can get a job with a felony conviction on your record.

Some may prefer to take advantage of any skills they already had, or learned during their period of incarceration. If you have a skill, like carpentry, you could make a run at having your own business. There are plenty of other things you could do. I know you can get a job with a felony conviction on your record, it's just a matter of keeping your options open, and making the most of every opportunity.

Increasing your chances:

There are some basic things you can do to improve your chances of landing a new position. If you're wondering, can I get a job with a felony conviction on my record, you should know that the answer is yes. There are some things you will want to do for improving your chances of landing work, so you can get a job despite the felony conviction on your record.

1. Be upfront. Many work places will run a background check on you, so don't try to hide it. Generally speaking, if you lie about your past convictions. While you may find fewer companies are willing to give you an interview, those that do will be more likely to hire you. Know that you can get a job with a felony conviction on your record.

2. Volunteer or do community service. This will appeal to most interviewers. Just because you've made a few mistakes in life, doesn't mean you cannot overcome. Even though you've paid your debt to society with incarceration or another penalty, you will likely still need to go above and beyond. Just say to yourself; I can get a job with a felony conviction on my record.

3. Accept a position, even if it's not the one you want. You can get a job with a felony conviction on your record, but you may have to work for a promotion to get it. Most people are forgiving and understanding, so if you do good work, you will likely be rewarded.

4. Explain what you've done to overcome any issues. There's nothing wrong with doing this in the interview, or even on a letter of introduction with your application. I know I can get a job with a felony conviction on my record, and here's what I'm doing to get it.

5. Make a professional resume. As noted above, a letter of introduction may also be a good idea. The more professional you are, the more likely you are to get a job with a felony conviction on your record.

6. Keep out of trouble. You can get hired with a felony conviction on your record, but if you've had several other misdemeanor charges since that time, it will be very hard to convince someone you've learned from your mistakes and moved on. As time goes on, with no charges, you'll find that people are much more forgiving, making it easier for you to land a great position.

If you're wondering, can I get a job with a felony conviction on my record, the answer is yes. Of course, there are some things you will need to do. Everyone makes mistakes, it's what makes us human. Those that learn from it, and move on with life stand the best chance of success. Just make the changes needed and you can get a job with a felony conviction on your record. It may take some time, but it can be done.

I just recently saw this article and all I can say is this gives me hope. I already have a job while I got my Felony and got my bachelor's in radio and television. I guess the only thing I need by my side is personal and professional references and to be upfront.
