Can you Get Too Much Sleep? (Hypersomnia)

By Edited Jun 7, 2014 0 0

First of all it is great to find why you are sleeping too much.   If you have hypersomnia, you can actually get too much sleep.  You may experience anxiety, low energy, and even memory problems, because it interrupts the normal sleep cycle.

Back pain and depression can cause for sleeping too much.  Doctors know how important it is to  keep up a certain level of activity.  15% of People with depression sleep too much.   This does not surprise me, because during depression, it can become a chore just to get out of bed. Alcohol and prescription medication are causes for sleeping too much for some people, especially when there is drug abuse.  Do you find yourself wanting to sleep all the time?

Possibly there is a medical problem such as low iron levels.  I have known those that want to sleep most of the time  when their iron levels are too low.   So if you feel that you need to sleep most of the day and most of the night, it might be wise to have a doctor give you a physical checkup.

A study with almost 9,000 Americans showed that those that slept more than 9 hours had a 50% greater risk of diabetes than those that slept seven hours per night.  In the National Sleep Poll of 2008 it shows that adults are sleeping 7-9 hours a night.  Naturally, the key is to find the right sleep pattern that works for you.

Although I know there are people who do it, I could not see myself sleeping all the time because there are too many things to do, too many places to go, and too many things to see.  Life is short.

If you are not able to regulate your sleep with your regular nocturnal sleep, you may want to take a look at limiting your caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine consumption.  Possibly you will consider not eating a big meal before bedtime.   You might want to begin to wind down thirty-six to 60 minutes before going to sleep by reading a book.  That is something that I do before bedtime.  I usually just like to lie down and relax my body about an hour before sleep.
