Image performance

The image performance of the Canon IXUS 115 HS is good enough for most uses. This camera is low cost although the 12.1 megapixel sensor will provide enough pixels if you wish to print off images at large sizes. Looking at example images, they look of reasonably good quality for a camera of this type price. The camera claims high-speed shooting and high-speed burst modes. The high-speed burst mode allows up to 3.7 shots per 2nd at the full 12.1 megapixel resolution, useful at sporting events or whenever there is fast action.

The face detection feature can detect up to 35 faces and will attempt to optimize the image for aspects such as focus, flash, white balance and exposure. It also has a clever feature called “smile and wink detection self–timer”. This feature waits for an extra face to get into the image and then smile or wink, before it takes the picture. The camera also has modes such as miniature and toy camera, and handheld nights in which attempts to create good night time pictures.

Design and ergonomics

The Canon IXUS 115 HS has a typical compact camera design. This design will be familiar to anyone who has used an old-fashioned compact film camera, or one of the many digital cameras that look very similar to this. The design of this camera enables it to slip into bags and large pockets with ease, although it is not the slimmest and most compact digital camera on the market.

  • Metal body
  • 12-megapixel sensor
  • 1080 p video recording
  • 4 times optical zoom

  • Not ultracompact
  • Own battery pack rather than AA/commonly available batteries
  • Photos are described as slightly soft
  • Colors of the photos may be a little muted

Is it right for you?

As ever before you buy any camera, you should attempt to try it in a store. When you go to the store you want to test the camera for its ergonomics and how well it fits in your hand. You also want to test how fast the shutter speed is and whether you like the look of the images or not. You may also be up to find it for a better price or bundles with accessories such as additional batteries and SD cards.

The Canon IXUS 115 HS provides a lot of features for not a lot of money. If you're after a camera for around £100/$150 then you should definitely take a look at it. Search Flickr for example images taken by this camera, as some people have noted that the colours and sharpness are not as good as they could be.
