Canon lenses - A review of the Canon 70mm - 200mm f/4 L IS USM

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Arguably, 70mm – 200mm zoom lenses are the most popular, and most useful, when it comes to general every day photography and taking walk about pictures. For all Canon owners there is only one lens to buy and that is the Canon EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM.

The Canon EF 70mm – 200mm L IS USM lens is also available with a maximum aperture of f/2.8, which is favoured by professional photographers although the 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM is most suitable for casual and enthusiast photographers. Whilst the f/2.8 is faster, it is heavier and much more expensive which puts it out of the reach of many casual photographers. As a result the EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM lens is a good alternative for those that do not have the same budget, but still wants to produce high quality professional looking images.

The EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM is a professional grade lens that comes in the distinctive cream white colour, as opposed to black. This lens shows the photographer means business, although it sometimes draws unwanted attention since anyone who knows anything about digital SLR cameras will be aware that white lenses are expensive. The easily identifiable cream white colour also makes it difficult to conceal the camera and lens when taking off the cuff candid shots as the subjects can pick out a white lens much easier than a black lens.

Being a professional lens, the EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM lens is bullet proof and built to last. It is constructed out of high quality materials that are rock solid. This lens is built for day to day use and abuse by professional photographers and it is built to last. Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM

lens can take a serious battering and come out unscathed.

The picture quality of the 70 – 200mm f/4 IS USM lens is simply outstanding, and is on par with that of the f/2.8 version. The images taken with the EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM lens are tack sharp, the colour rendition is spot on and it is possible to get smooth and creamy bokeh. The level of detail the 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM can produce is absolutely fantastic. Wide open, i.e. at f/4 the images sometimes come out soft, but this is only really noticeable if you crop in really tight. Stop the lens down a notch and the images become much sharper. To really see just how sharp this lens is, simply stick it on a tripod and fire of a few frames via a cable release shutter.

The 70mm - 200mm can even be used for motorsports

The 2 stop image stabilisation is a fantastic feature that reduces the chances of the dreaded camera shake when taking hand held shots, even in low light conditions. If the EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM is used on a tripod you need to turn the image stabilisation off. Leaving the image stabilisation on in these circumstances will actually lead to blurry images as the image stabilisation unit will over compensate for the lack of camera movement.

The EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM lens takes a 67mm filter size, which is a common size. This is advantageous since there are many third party filters available in this size, which are cheaper than the genuine Canon produced filters, helping to keep costs down somewhat.

The EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM lens is supplied with a protective cloth bag and a lens hood, which whilst a nice touch, should really be expected given this is a high grade piece of photographic equipment. Many lenses are supplied with a tripod collar unfortunately this is not the case with the EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM which is a bit of a disappointment. If you want a tripod collar they are available. Give a tripod collar is little more than a rig that is put around the lens, the genuine Canon collars are exceptionally expensive however there are cheaper third party alternatives available on sites like Amazon and Ebay.

One of the best things about the Canon EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM lens is the versatility. At the short end it is ideal for taking full length portraits, and given the reasonable wide maximum aperture it is possible to get a tack sharp subject and nicely blur out the background, really making the subject pop. The EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM is also ideal for landscape photography, taking images of wildlife (as long as it is relatively close) and for candid shots. The Canon EF 70mm – 200mm f/4 L IS USM can be used for almost anything, even macro photography if used with extension tubes and close up filters.
