A canopy bed is a popular choice of bed for many people. Although it looks a lot more formal than most beds, you will find them in a number of bedrooms around the world. They look great, they look traditional, and they add a little extra privacy to your sleeping area. A canopy bed is pretty similar to a four poster bed. It usually has features posts at each of the four corners that extend about 4 feet high above the height of the mattress. You can also find a lot of decorative fabric that is draped over the top and between the posts. This cloth may form the ceiling, or the canopy above the bed. You can buy a find a large range of fabric styles and you will be sure to find one that suits your home and your bedroom.

There is a little bit of history when we are talking about canopy beds. They originally came into favor as utilitarian means rather than for extravagance or decadence as is thought of by many people because of how it looks. The earliest kinds of canopy beds were made because many people were seeking an extra layer of shelter beyond a thatch roof which many people had. Canopy beds that had curtains were able to completely enclose the bed and were often used in the medieval times. They were used for warmth and privacy by lords and noblemen. This was because their attendants used to sleep in the same room as them. Until about the sixteenth century canopy beds were very plain and not extravagant at all. During this time, the work on the posts became more intricate, and the carved work on the head board became more decorative. From here canopy beds became more extravagant and popular. They are a far cry from the new and modernfuton beds!

Modern canopy beds can fit into two categories. They are traditional or they are contemporary. Traditional canopy beds will look like they are from the Victorian times; they will have metal rod frames, or very extravagantly designed carved wood frames and posts. These traditional style beds will also have ruffled and pleated draping and the cloth is heavy. Contemporary beds on the other hand are usually much simpler. If you are looking to buy a canopy bed then you need to consider how much room you have and what style you really want. If you room is a more traditional design then you should get a more traditional bed, and if you need a little more privacy, then it is a great option for you.
