One of the Funniest Superheroes for Kids
If you are a teacher or a parent over a child in elementary school, then you have certainly heard about Captain Underpants. Written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey, this is a series of books that adults either love or hate, but kids, especially boys, love them.
What is This Book Series About?
There are ten books in the series. The first, titled The Adventures of Captain Underpants, An Epic Novel introduces us to the protagonists, George Beard and Harold Hutchins, a pair of fourth graders whom the principal, Mr. Krupp, does not like at all. They spend their time pulling pranks and drawing comics, two unacademic and unacceptable kinds of activities. One of their favorite things to do is turn the principal into the superhero they created, the round man in tighty whity underwear.
Throughout the book series, children are entertained from the start, with titles such as Captain Underpants and...
The Attack of the Talking Toilets: The Second Epic Novel
The Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies from Outer Space (and the Subsequent Assault of the Equally Evil Lunchroom Zombie Nerds): The Third Epic Novel
The Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants: The Fourth Epic Novel
The Wrath Of The Wicked Wedgie Women:The Fifth Epic Novel
The Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy Part 1: The Night of the Nasty Nostril Nuggets: Night Of The Nasty Nostril Part 1
The Big, Bad, Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy, Part 2
The Preposterous Plight Of The Purple Potty People

Not all parents are fond of the book series. Despite them being New York Times best sellers, they feel the books are not only thin on plot, but they are promoting toilet humor, something that not all parents enjoy or appreciate. Many of the words in the book are mispelled, as it is written by George and Harold, who are not the most academic types. There are parents who feel that exposing their child to incorrect spelling will tell them that it is okay-spelling does not matter.
On the flip side of the coin, there are teachers and parents, myself included, who promote these books because they are silly, funny and encourage non-readers to read. The only way a child will improve her skills is to practice, and if reading Captain Underpants encourages a reluctant reader to pick up a book, then I am all for it.

The Movie is in Production
It took many years to convince Dav Pilkey to permit his beloved characters to be translated to the big screen. He was fearful that what he wanted the books to convey would not translate well into a movie. However, Dreamworks Animation convinced Pilkey that his work was safe in their hands after seeing How to Train Your Dragon and the Kung Fu Panda movie.
In fact, Dreamworks offered Pilkey as much involvement in the film as he wanted. But he feels that they do not need his help, as they know what they are doing.
Fans of Captain Underpants are awaiting more details about when the movie will be released and who will have the starring roles.
