Scratches can affect the look of your car and cause rust damage. From light scratches which are barely noticeable to deep scratches that can cause heavy damage to the car's chassis, you can repair them on your own. There are many ways to repair car scratches and prevent rust from forming, even if you do not have extensive experience in car scratch repair. In this article, I will share with you some simple tips for you to learn how to repair car scratches. As car scratch repair cost can be quite expensive, it is recommended that you learn how to perform the car scratch repairs yourself.

Light Scratches

Take a close look at the car scratch and run your hand over it. If you can't feel the scratch, this means that it hasn't cut into the paint coating. Get a clean microfiber towel as well as a gentle abrasive liquid rubbing compound. Apply the compound to the clean towel and gently rub back and forth a few times across the scratch, but concentrate more on moving across the scratch. This will allow the compound to fill in the scratch fully and slowly break down the sharp edges that make up the scratch. After doing this for a couple of minutes, the scratch should then be barely visible. You can continue rubbing the compound across the scratch until it disappears completely.

Once the car scratches are removed, you can go one step further by rubbing car polish over the area to bring out a shine and at the same time reduce the appearance of the scratch. Do this by using a cotton cloth to apply the polish and rub back and forth and in circular motions over the area.

Medium Scratches

This type of scratch goes into the clear coat paint, but not the base color paint. As such, there is no need for any touch-up paint to repair this type of car scratches.

You can start by using an abrasive liquid rubbing compound and a dual-action orbital polisher. Apply the liquid compound to the polisher's pad and place it on the scratch. Next, move the polisher back and forth and in circular motions over the scratch area. You can check often to see whether the scratch is becoming lighter. Once the car paint scratch repair is done, you can proceed to apply car polish to bring out a shine in that area.

Deep Scratches

This type of car scratch repair will require some sanding, painting and polishing to repair the car scratches totally. You can start by lightly sanding the scratch across and length ways using a 300-grit sandpaper. Once the scratch feels smooth, you can proceed to apply some touch-up paint to cover the bare metal. You can use a Q-tip to apply the paint. You should build the paint up in the scratch until it stands higher than the surrounding surface of the car. Then allow the paint to dry for at least one hour before touching it. Next, you can use a 800-grit sandpaper to sand the paint lightly until it is smooth alongside the surrounding surface. The final step will be to use some car polish to restore the shine back to the sanded areas.
