How to write a greeting card verse

How many times have you looked at greeting card verses and thought that you could do better? Well I know that I did that a lot so I decided to see if I could do better. My mother’s birthday was coming up soon so I decided to give myself the task of writing birthday card verses first. After searching around on the internet and looking at a lot of endless advice (good and bad) I believe that I may have found a good way to write greeting card verses.

I am not a professional writer but I have put together some steps which I hope will help you. They helped me a lot.

I personally do this as a hobby as I make my own greeting cards but you could try your hand at being professional if you want with the same steps.

Things you need

  1. A good dictionary
  2. A good thesaurus
  3. A good rhyming dictionary
  4. Various greeting card verses (purchase random cards)
  5. A computer

Even if you think your command of the English language is really good I would suggest that you have all the above so you can be as productive as possible.

Now let’s look at the steps one by one – there are a total of seven.

The Seven Steps

Step 1

One of the reasons you are probably reading this is because you think greeting card verses are rather boring or bland. Your first attempts may well be the same so don’t be too critical of these card verses just yet.

Step 2

Understand that you don’t have to be a poet to write a good greeting card verse but rather you will be writing everyday speech within the structure of rhyme.

Step 3

Don’t get complicated keep it nice and simple like everyday language. People will connect better with what you are saying.

Step 4

Read a lot of different greeting card verses to see and understand writing styles etc.

Step 5

You can paraphrase (reword) good greeting card verses.

Step 6

Think about what you really want to say in your greeting card verse and don’t wander off subject. Remember Step 3 don’t get complicated.

Step 7

Keep your verse general and not too specific otherwise your greeting card verse will have a limited use and audience. This will in turn restrict the marketability of your greeting card verses if you want to use them for professional gains.

That completes the seven steps to writing an effective greeting card verse. This technique can be applied to any greeting card which can include but not restricted to, birthday cards, Christmas cards, anniversary cards, sympathy cards, thank you cards and so on.

As I said at the beginning of this article I use this method for my personal enjoyment when making greeting cards. I get a lot of satisfaction from making my own greeting card verses which I then put in my own handmade cards.

I hope that you found this helpful, now all you have to do is start.

Happy writing.
