Carpet Shampoo
When you get a professional carpet shampooer to clean your carpets or rugs you know you're going to have to pay for the cost of labor, for the truck mounted steam equipment and for the high powered vacuum systems they use and not just for the carpet shampoo.
Bissell and Kirby Carpet Shampoo Machines
Sometimes it's easier to just buy a Bissell carpet shampoo machine and do it yourself. There are numerous models that you can either buy or rent and one very popular home system is the Kirby and this allows you to clean as often as you like. There is also a high powered carpet shampoo machine that can be rented from some supermarkets for a reasonable price, then all you have to do is buy the carpet shampoo and add it to the unit and steam clean your own rugs.
Cleaning Your Own Carpets
If you choose to go with the rental equipment you'll need to have some time and patience because cleaning your own carpets is a big job if you have wall to wall carpeting. If it's just for area rugs then it might be good to first see if you can find a carpet cleaner or a dry cleaner who specializes in rug cleaning that are portable.
But let's say you have decided to rent a machine for the day and get everything done at once. There are a few things you should know before you start.
Carpet Shampooing Rental Machines
First, shampooing, using rental equipment usually involves gallons and gallons of water that are sprayed onto your carpets and then sucked back up. However, most machines are not powerful enough to suck up all the water out of your carpet and leave it dry. Instead, much of the water remains trapped inside the lower regions of the carpet, with ingrained dirt and this is a recipe for mold and mildew.
A carpet shampoo cleaner that uses water will require you to first add the water and then do the shampooing and then wait a day or longer for it to dry. In the summer this may be aided by leaving the windows and doors open and placing fans in strategic places to circulate the airflow. In winter this can be a bit trickier because windows may not able to be left open for long periods of time, however fans still work.
