Carpet Steam Cleaners, Avoid These Pitfalls

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

The great advantage of getting professional steam cleaners in to thoroughly clean your carpets is that you don't have to worry about making any mistakes. They know what they're doing and have all the right equipment. There is of course another great advantage and that is that they do all the hard work! But if you've used their services you will also know that they aren't cheap and if you want or need your carpets cleaned more than twice a year then you might seriously want to consider buying your own domestic carpet cleaner which will certainly save you a lot of money in the long term.

There are a few good reasons to hire a carpet cleaning service. For a start the professionals know what they're doing and you don't so you had better face up to a quick crash course in carpet cleaning machines. You need to know what novice mistakes to avoid so that you don't end up buying the wrong model for your needs; a costly mistake for sure. In this article we will look at a few of the straight forward blunders to avoid.

Don't overestimate your needs.

Carpet steam cleaning technology has made such advances in the domestic market that some of the machines available are comparable to the commercial cleaners that the professionals use. While this is a welcome innovation you should consider carefully whether you need a state of the art cleaner. If you live in a home with just a couple of rooms then there really is no need to go crazy, a small portable cleaner with an upholstery attachment would probably be sufficient for your needs and a lot easier to store away.

Don't underestimate your needs either.

Just because a cleaner is manufactured by a respected brand and costs a bomb doesn't mean it will do everything you want it to. Take the time to walk round your home noting down the jobs you will need to tackle on a regular basis. You can take for granted that it will cope with your main areas of carpets but what about the odd jobs like stair cleaning, bare floor cleaning or cleaning for specific stains and smells like pets? Tight spaces and delicate upholstery are two other specific jobs that may not be covered by some models.

Heavy or light cleaning?

Cleaning your carpets on a regular basis will certainly extend the life of your rugs and carpets, not to mention improving your homes hygiene, but do also remember that not all carpets and rugs are the same. Many carpet cleaners are designed to clean quite aggressively with high water temperatures and high pressure. You must consider the type of surfaces you want to clean. If you have expensive and delicate rugs or upholstery, for instance, take care to buy a cleaner that has specific features to tackle these jobs and also take some time to choose a suitable carpet cleaning solution. You could end up doing more harm than good.

Carpet steam cleaners are not as straight forward as a vacuum cleaner so be sure to do your research before you buy and expect to take some time reading the user manuals thoroughly before your first clean.
