Arthritis is a disease condition that is characterized by inflammation of the joints, with resultant swelling, pain, stiffness, and redness. Arthritis refers to many joint disorders that come up as a result of different types of conditions.
Two major types of Arthritis
There are many types of arthritis, but we here shall discuss two types of arthritis â osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis results due to aging joints. The joints commonly attacked are the fingers, hips, and knees. This takes place when the cartilage cushions which lines the joints become stiffer and rougher. There are two types of osteoarthritis, primary and secondary.
i. Primary Osteoarthritis
This type affects adults of over 45 years old and above, affecting the neck, fingers, lower back, hips and knees. The cause of this condition is known, but mostly the obese persons are often are victims than slim persons.
Weight causes pressure mount up on all the weight bearing joints. Running and jumping by an over weight individual causes a greater pressure more than the individual's weight to be exerted on the joints of the body. Obese victims are often crippled by this condition.
ii. Secondary Osteoarthritis
Repetitive traumas of the joints result in this disorder. Most victims are ex-sportsmen and women. Weight lifters usually have arthritis in their shoulders and knees, due to repetitive traumas to these joints. Tennis players usually have arthritis on their dormant shoulder and golfers on their lower backs. The repetitive nature of factory workers' job results in secondary arthritis.
Symptoms common to victims of osteoarthritis include, morning stiffness, stiffness following a period of rest, painful joints during use, loss of joint function, joint tenderness, joint break and crack during movement, restricted mobility, and continual pain at the joints.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is the most severe type of arthritis that affects more women than men. Osteoarthritis is age related, while rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease. This type of arthritis can affect the whole body. The affected joints are usually swollen and tender.
Symptoms common in victims of rheumatoid arthritis include, attack to persons of 25 years to 50 years and sometimes affects children, pains and swelling in the joints within a few weeks, loss of weight, morning stiffness, extreme fatigue and always sick, feverish feeling, and joints pains of both side of body.
