Causes and remedies for constipation
Constipation
can involve either infrequent stools or dry stools that are difficult to pass.
The disorder causes waste matter to remain in the colon, ferment, and then
release toxic gases into the bloodstream making an ideal environment for
bacteria and viruses. Up to 90% of all diseases stem from an unclean colon.
Causes
There are many causes for constipation but most conditions are easily treated.
The usual causes are inadequate diet and the style of living. Changing your
diet can usually improve waste elimination fairly quickly along with a regular
exercise routine. Some of the causes of constipation can include:
- A diet lacking roughage
- Excess amount of highly processed foods
- Lack of exercise causing poor muscle tone in the intestinal or abdominal wall
- Frequently not eliminating when your body signals you to do so
- Inadequate water
- Insufficient chewing
- Overeating
- A large consumption of meat
- Overuse of laxatives
- A high intake of milk products
- Hypothyroidism
- Excessive fatigue
- Nervousness
- Anxiety
There are also certain medications that can contribute to constipation, the
most common are: iron supplements, aluminum based antacids, codeine,
hydromorphone, oxycodone, imipramine, amitriptyline, diltiazem, nifedipine,
carbamazepine, and phenytoin.
The bowels should she be relieved approximately every 12 hours. Although the
time span can vary the number of bowel movements usually decrease as you get
older. According to medical standards, less then three bowel movements per week
would be considered constipation. Acute constipation would be only one bowel
movement per week.
Remedies for constipation
There are many remedies for constipation that can encourage healthy bowel function. However, you
do want to make sure and check with your physician if you think it might be
something serious. For the most part, the majority of people who experience
constipation usually can get effective results by just changing their diet.
Changing your diet can improve waste elimination fairly quickly along with a
regular exercise routine.
- Most fruits are beneficial except for bananas. Grapes, pears, guava, limes, lemons, papaya, plums, and oranges are all good sources.
- Dried figs or raisins can be soaked in water overnight for the next morning.
- Wheat, oat bran, whole grains
- Fresh green and leafy vegetables
- Yogurt to establish good intestinal flora
- Psyllium seed to help elimination
Lifestyle
- Slow down when you eat and make sure you chew your food completely.
- Start toning the abdomen.
- Get plenty of exercise, this promotes overall good health.
- Eliminate when your body tells you to.
- Drink plenty of liquids.
- Laxatives
Generally you do not want to use a stimulant laxative like Ex-Lax or Castor oil
for more than a week because it can lead to dependence in order to have a bowel
movement. If constipation continues then it is best to consult a physician.
