What Is the Caveman Diet???

The caveman diet a way of eating that is based on the idea you should eat only what our Paleolithic ancestors had access to.  It is very similar to the paleo diet.  Basically, anything pre-Agricultural Revolution.  Grains and domesticated animals have only been around for 10,000 years or so, so believers of this diet feel that our systems are not made for the foods that people currently eat.  The main food groups are fruits, non-starchy vegetables, lean meat, and fish.

Within the whole caveman diet tribe, there exist many different levels of strictness when it comes to the kind of food they will eat.  On one side there are those who try to eat about 80% of the caveman diet.  These people commonly incorporate cheese, vinegars, wine, and a few other essentials to the diet, but still never grains.  Then there are those who are 100% caveman and eat raw meat and avoid even tomatoes and eggplant because of their apparent toxic assets. If you are new to the whole concept, it is recommended that you start by at first just getting rid of the grains and seeing where you can go from there. 

The point of this diet is not to lose weight, but to increase health and the longevity of life.  The caveman diet was not created for weight loss but it is commonly a side effect. Most people who follow this way of life for the long term eventually reach their ideal body weight. Despite this, the caveman diet can be used for the sole purpose of losing weight.

So What Can I Eat?

As a reiteration, fruits, non-starchy vegetables, lean meat,  fish, nuts, berries. One of the most important things to remember:  Do not count calories or measure the amounts of food you eat.  Our caveman ancestors ate as much as they wanted until they were satisfied.  A common rule is to eat until satiety and then stop.  Wait 10 minutes and if you are still hungry, by all means, dig in!  It also does not matter what time of day you eat because you eat when you are hungry.  If this happens to be at 2 AM then go eat.  Welcome to caveman life!

What Can’t I Eat?

Food not on the list includes pre-packaged, mass-produced foods, but also salt, sugar, dairy, grains, legumes, vinegar, beans.  You can kind of think of it this way:  If it comes in a package, you probably can’t eat it.   But, if your having a strong sugar craving, go eat some honey.  It is the 100% natural alternative to eating twinkies and donuts.

Why Not Grains?

Grains were not mass farmed in the 2.5 million years our ancestors roamed in the wild.  This did not come until the development of agriculture 10,000 years ago, therefore, they don’t make the cut. But that’s not the whole of it. To eat these they either need to be soaked, boiled, or baked before being rendered edible because they are some people consider them poisonous in their raw states. Even with boiling, we still experience some of the effects from gluten or other properties due to the antinutrients in them.
