Cell Phone Jammers May Be Fun, But Using One Can Land You In Tons Of Trouble

If you're like the rest of the population, you sometimes get irritated by other's cell phone usage. There is very little regard to what is socially acceptable use of a cell phone these days especially amongst young people. This is why some clever individual invented the portable cell phone jammer.

20 years ago, cell phones were larger, less useful, and were much easier to interfere with. Nearly any radio device could cause a call to drop. Cell phone technology has come a long way since then, and so have jammers. A cell phone jammer emits radio waves along the same  frequencies that mobile phones use. This causes enough interference between the phone and the cell tower to render it unusable.

Portable cell phone jammers have the ability to block radio signals from around 12 feet. Dedicated units can block signals from kilometers away. Ever sat next to a loudmouth on the bus? Somebody jabbering away on their phone in line at Starbucks? How cool would it be to be able to reach into your pocket and cancel their call with the push of a button? I would love it!

Unfortunately, cell phone jammers are illegal pretty much everywhere. In Canada for example, they are illegal for civilian use under all circumstances. Government agencies can possess and use the jammers if they obtain a special permit. In the USA, government agencies can use cell phone jammers, but civilian usage can net you a $112,000 fine and up to a year in jail....ouch!

A year in jail is a little too harsh for a little bit of fun. Looks like cell phone jammers won't be in the pockets of everyday people anytime in the near future. Remember there are other options for dealing with irritating people who have no sense of socially acceptable phone usage including:

  • Honesty - Just tell them to put the phone away and be quiet. Too many of us are so scared of confrontation that we would rather be irritated for an hour on the bus than just ask someone to shut up.
  • Earplugs - Tried, tested and true, earplugs can drown out even the most irritating teenage girls.
  • Ipod - Throw on some music and you won't hear those folks chirping away about nonsense on their phones anymore!

Although there are plans available to build cell phone jammers at home, I strongly recommend you not do this. If you're caught, you can face some hard jail time, all for a little fun. Leave the cell phone jammers to the government for now.
