Central Heating and Air Conditioning: What You Should Know

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

A forced air system like central heating and cooling is when the cooled, humidified air travels through the same system as the heated air, just at different times of the year, of course. It is necessary to have central heating in areas where winter is especially cold. Gas, oil, electricity, solid fuel or solar power can power these systems. In most homes, the primary heating appliance is located in a basement or its own room. Heat gets distributed to different areas of the house assisted by air ducts, or sometimes from shooting steam or water through the pipes to convection systems and radiators. The ceiling and walls of the house have to be well insulated so that most of the heat is contained inside.

Residential air conditioning is common in places where the temperature is very hot in the summer. An air conditioner removes heat from the air using the basic principles of refrigeration. A unit that also contains a heat pump serves two purposes: it cools down a house when it is hot, and it also offers heating when it is cold. During the cold season, the external air is gleaned by the heat pump and transported inside. To cool down the house during the hot summer months, it removes the hot air from inside the house and sends it outside. Tubing full of refrigerant connects the indoor air handler to the outdoor condenser/compressor. As the refrigerant travels throughout the system, it finishes the refrigeration cycle by cooling and warming the coils while the handler and blower move the air throughout the house.

If your family is having trouble with their health, check your central heating and air conditioning unit. These can really dry out the air in your home. Humidifiers can help people who have conditions like asthma or bronchitis, as they provide moist air that can relieve some symptoms. A can of water hung from a radiator is a simple humidifier while a battery or electrical humidifier is more complex. Your humidifier, particularly if it's one that doesn't create steam, must be occasionally disinfected with a cleaning agent.

If mold from high humidity is a concern, it can be very beneficial to install a de-humidifier to help protect your clothes, sheets, and other linens. Dehumidifiers are good in beach side areas where humidity levels can be high, particularly in the winter season.

Choose a reputable contractor if you are installing central heating and air conditioning. Taking good care of your equipment after you properly install it is key to making sure it lasts and doesn't break down. With good maintenance, central heating and air conditioning should be usable from 12 to 14 years. To ensure that the system doesn't leak and drains properly, it's vital to have maintenance done on it regularly. Too much water should not be allowed to remain in the system. Be sure that the condensate tube drains cleanly, and check the hose connections for any cracks or leaks. You must change the filter every 4-5 weeks for most models.
