Chainless bicycles- Gates Carbon Drive system

By | Dec 18, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Trade your bicycle chain in for a Gates Carbon Drive belt system. Carbon Drive Systems has designed a belt driven bicycle that will is clean. No oil stains on your socks or trousers and mud won't cake up on your drive system either.

There are other brands of belt driven bicycles but the Gates Carbon Drive system is, according to their website, a better, stronger and more reliable belt drive. Heres what Carbon Drive Systems has to say about their Carbon Belt Drive.

"The carbon cords inside the patented Gates Carbon Drive™ belt offer, for the first time, the necessary tensile strength and high modulus to provide the smooth, clean, and long lasting ride advantage of a "belt" driven system in a bicycle application. The specially designed tooth pitch and meticulously engineered sprocket profile afford the belt efficiency equal to that of a standard chain, with the low tension necessary to prevent unnecessary bearing load on other components. "

Some of the bikes that are being built with the Gates Carbon Drive System include the Falk Road FR 5.4 Gringo, the Trek Soho, and the Nicolai Argon TR. There is even a 29er mountain bike with the Gates Carbon Drive belt system from SpotBike.

If you are looking at building your own bicycle and want to use the Gates Carbon Drive Belt System you will need to make sure that the bike frame you plan on using has an opening or split in the frame.

Some benefits of using a Gates Carbon Drive System is that it is maintenance free, runs quiet and mud will not cake up and cause mechanical difficulties. The Gates Caron Drive System is also lighter than using a chaindrive system and extremely durable. There is no chain to rust and maintenance is virtually zero, making belt driven systems for bicycles more popular with bicycle commuters.

The Carbon Drive System is not new, nor is the chainless bicycle, but the Gates Carbon Drive System has took this technology to a new level and made it not only affordable, but also available.
