Chair Lift For Stairs

By Edited Apr 20, 2014 0 0

Getting a chair lift for stairs in your home as well as the ones leading to your front door can really help give the person or people in your house who can't use them on their own some freedom. One of the hardest things to have to deal with is becoming too dependent on other people for your own survival. Unfortunately, most of us will face this at one time or another in our life. It would be a lot more convenient if you were to just get a one story house and install ramps everywhere but that isn't something that is practical. Whether you have stairs that go straight up to the second floor or ones that spiral around, you can install a stair lift for any time of stair design that you may have.

The first time I saw one of these was at my grandparent's house. As I walked in, I saw this metal bar fixed on the side of the stairs with a chair at the top facing the stairs. I then saw my grandmother sit in it and slowly descended down the stairs. The very first thought that came to my mind was, "I gotta try that." So, I did. I got to say, for someone like my grandmother who is in her 80's, that chair lift is the most useful thing in the house. I remember before the lift was installed, someone would always have to give her a hand to get up and down from her room. Most of the time, since the other people in the home work during the day, she would remain down stairs. When they got home, they would help her go upstairs if she needed to. After a while, it got a little frustrating for her since she sometimes wanted to go up during the day to rest in her room. There was a bed down stairs for this reason but she preferred her room. So, they decide to get a chair lift for stairs.

These don't come cheap and can cost over $1,000. The price will really depend on the type of stairs you have as well as the kind of chair lift. Some just work better than others. You can look online to see what is available and compare the different prices to see what kind of deal you can get. Many of them will come with easy installation instructions but unless if you're really good with installing things like this, you may want to just leave it to a professional since you don't want to go wrong with the installation on something like this. It may take a couple of hours to install. The way the chair lift works in terms of getting on and off the stairs may need some time getting used to. When I reached the top of the stairs, while getting off, I almost felt like the chair could come lose and fall any moment since I wasn't used to having a chair on the side of the stairs like that. My grandmother seems to use it just fine though.

The point of the chair lift for stairs is to give people who have lost their ability to do things that used to be simple to them more freedom. Now, during the day, she is able to freely go wherever she wants around the home without anyone having to help her. This has restored some independence back into her life and she couldn't be any happier. Although installing one of these isn't cheap, giving the people in your house that feeling of freedom is something that you just can't put a price on.
