Changes In Tennis Fashion
Since tennis became popular as a sport, the styles of tennis clothes have changed a lot. Even the fabric and colors have changed in the past fifty years. In England, the very first people who played the sport wore formal clothes. Women's tennis clothes were dresses that went down to the floor. The men had on their formal shirts and long pants. All the tennis clothes were white.
Now we see professionals wearing tennis clothes that come in more colors, more diverse fabrics, and styles that are not as stifling as they used to be.
The change in how tennis clothes were designed came with the revolution of fashion styles. Male tennis pros in the '70s and the '80s would wear tennis shorts that were tight and very short. They also wear formal shirts. But during the 90's and the 2000's, we began to see male tennis pros wearing more loose-fitting shorts and shirts.
Female tennis players also experienced a revolution in their tennis clothes. They used to only wear the short tennis dresses and skirts but now they wear t-shirts and shorts. Traditional clubs such as the Wimbledon still require their players to wear all-white tennis clothes, but more clubs are starting to allow a variety of colors. Ladies sportswear has changed dramatically over the past 25 years.
The styles and designs of tennis clothes also changed since the sport became a lot more athletic. Tennis has become a high-intensity activity wherein the players need to exert concentrated effort to win. They have to wear clothes that allow them to jump, run, and move in the many different directions they need to in the fastest possible way. They need to be able to do all these comfortably. To provide comfort, tennis clothes must allow their bodies to breathe and give them some protection against sweat. The clothes should allow the player to still be comfortable no matter how hot the weather is.
Since technology for making clothes have become more developed throughout the years, tennis clothes were able to be revolutionized more. From the standard fabric used (which was cotton), producers of tennis clothes now branch out into synthetic fibers. These allow the body to sweat less and keep the sweat far from their bodies. Some good examples are the ClimaCool technology for Adidas, Nike Dri-FIT, and Under Armour shirts.
All in all, tennis clothes have gone through a lot of changes since they were first used. While there are still some remnants of the traditional designs, what matters more now is the players' comfort and sense of individuality. The factors that led to this revolution in the designs of tennis clothes are technological advancements, changes in fashion styles, and the fact that tennis has become a more athletic sport.
