Charities for Americans

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

We see commercials often on TV for various charities.  But I think there is a lack of advertising for charities who help Americans right here at home.  In this article we will take a look at different organizations whose primary focus is on American people.

Feeding America
Feeding America is an organization that helps to fight hunger in the United States.  According to the statistics listed on their website, 1 out of every 6 Americans are dealing with hunger.  Feeding America acquires grants and private funding, and works with farmers, manufacturers, government agencies, and retailers to provide food to more than 37 million Americans each year.  With the steadily failing economy and high unemployment rates, this is something that many are in need of.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
Cell Phones for Soldiers is a program that uses recycled cell phones to provide troops with free communication while serving in the U.S. military.  You can also donate cash, and each $5 provides 2 1/2 hours of free talk time.   Many drop off sites are located throughout the country, and the website offers a search by zip code feature to locate one near you.

1-800-Runaway is a service that offers intervention to families with at risk youth.  They also offer message relay and conference calling for families of runaways.  Services are provided 24 hours a day and assist with needs such as food, shelter, medical access, and finding local services.  They are also partnered with Greyhound transportation and provide runaways with a free bus ticket back home.

Zero is the project to end prostate cancer.  Their goal is to raise $2.5 million in order to provide free testing, research, and advocacy.   Donations are tax-deductible and they offer a share program.  They provide a nationwide mobile screening, offering prostate tests for free.  Tests are sent off, with men receiving their results in the mail.  Information is sent to them on how and where to seek further medical advice if needed.

Breast cancer(111810)
American Breast Cancer Foundation is the only national breast cancer foundation that offers uninsured and under served individuals with financial assistance toward screening and treatment.  It is based out of Baltimore, Maryland.  They also offer assistance with wigs, emergency treatment, prostheses, and medications.  You can donate directly to the cause or sponsor a fundraiser.

Sometimes its easy to forget that there are people in our homeland who need assistance.  The need in America is great in many areas, and there are many others besides the ones listed above.  Even if you don't have the financial means to donate, there are other means of helping by volunteering in your community or local food bank.   The old saying, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is a great philosophy to have.  If you are blessed in finances, then give to something worthy.  Or maybe you have excess from your garden or farm.  Some people don't like to give their hard earned money to a charity in fear that the money will not be spent for what it was intended.  But a quick look around at family members, neighbors, friends of your children, or local shelters will surely show a need of something.
