Donating to a Cause
Choosing the right charity for you can be a difficult task. After all, you only have so much money set aside to give away in the form of charitable donations, so it is important to choose wisely and to give to organizations with proven track records and that hold a place near and dear to your heart. There are several different factors that will go into your decision-making process, and after you complete your research, you may find that you want to give to more than one organization.
For instance, in recent times, there seems to be a significant uptick in the occurrence of natural disasters (although that is probably more perception due to 24/7 news coverage of earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes than the reality), so you may want to give at least some of the money that you have set aside for donating to a tried and true disaster relief organization, such as the Red Cross, as this is a good way to ensure that sure that your hard earned dollars will definitely reach the people living in the devastated area in question.
Perhaps you have a soft spot in your heart for animals in need or rescue and other services. If so, you may want to donate at least a portion of the money you have saved for charity to an organization like the ASPCA, another established charitable organization with a very strong record of making sure money reaches the animals in need.
A third well established group is the Make A Wish Foundation, which, as you probably already know, grants wishes for children who have been diagnosed with terminal illnesses. Some kids choose to go to Disney World or other fun destinations, whereas others choose to meet favorite celebrities, and still other children make a variety of other imaginative wishes.
You are probably sensing a common theme here, namely, that it is often advisable to give your money to organizations that have been around for a while and have established strong reputations over time.
If you are interested in looking into newer charitable groups, one that has been generating a lot of press and interest is on online organization called DonorsChoose.org. Using this website, people can donate to a wide variety of different school-based projects, all through in one centralized site, which is a great convenience, and seems to be a particularly good match for donors living in the Internet Era. You get to specify exactly which school or educational project you wish to donate money to, and if you like, you can spread out your donation among different projects. Of course, you will want to do some additional research before deciding precisely which of these (and/or other) charitable organizations suits you the best.
