Bay Window Curtains: Dress Your Beautiful Window

Bay windows are widely found in homes built in the Victorian era, they are windows that project outwards as opposed to regular windows that form a flat surface. When looking at a bay window from the indoors it forms a bay in the room, and they are usually square or polygonal in shape. When it comes to purchasing curtains for a bay window, they must always be the right fit and the curtain rails are specifically designed for bay windows. Therefore the best option is always to go for custom fitted bay window curtains.

Problems with Bay Windows

Bay windows, although they look beautiful from a design perspective, they can cause problems when purchasing and fitting curtains. Some people do opt for a ceiling fitted curtain poll and straight across curtains, this option destroys the beauty of the bay window and it means that when the curtains are drawn they cannot be seen. It is easier to fit a straight curtain poll however from a design point of view this might not be the best option.

Solving the problem

The best option for bay windows would be to use a flexible curtain rail, this would mean that the curtain rail could be fitted at the top of the bay window. meaning that even when the curtains are drawn you would still be able to appreciate the beauty of the bay.

Bay Window Curtain Options

There are a wide range of curtain styles to choose from for bay windows, many people think that choosing curtains for bay windows can be very difficult. However it is quite the opposite, the problem may lie in the form of what kind of curtain pole to get, but when it comes to curtains there are an abundance of options to choose from.

Cafe Style Curtains

Cafe style curtains are often seen in cafes hence the name. They are not full curtains and they only cover half the window therefore providing privacy at the same time as letting in light. Cafe curtains for bay windows does actually make the fitting them much easier than if they were to be full curtains.

Sheer or Semi Sheer Curtains

Houses with bay windows often bring in a lot of natural light. Therefore by opting for sheer or semi sheer bay window curtains you could get some privacy but you still get the added benefit of light flooding into the room. The bay can also cause a house to be slightly draughty, therefore you could use semi sheer curtains in the summer without any extra drapes, and in the winter you could add lined drapes to keep the heat in.

Long Panel Drapes

Long panel drapes look elegant when used on bay windows. They can be made to measure and fit the bay window to your exact specifications. Some bay window areas have a window seal and some don't. For bay windows with a seal, curtains can be made to fit neatly so that they are not longer than the the window seal. For bay window areas that don't have a seal, the curtains can be made to drape elegantly, just missing the floor but framing the window stylishly. One thing that long panel drapes do to bay window areas is, they make them look longer, therefore creating a more streamlined look. Panel drapes, also come in a plethora of colours and fabrics, you can either go for cotton, polyester of even silk. Cotton is best if you don't have the funds to splash out on some expensive fabric. They are also really easy to take care of, as they don't require any special cleaning methods. They keep the room cool in the summer and warm in the winter, especially if you go for lined cotton curtains. Polyester is an option if you really don't want to spend too much but you want a modern look. The only downside to polyester is that it probably won't last as long as say cotton, or silk.

Silk is always a good option if you want to add dramatic glamour to your windows. Silk bay window curtains are the perfect addition to a room with traditional luxury décor. There are different types of silk, however the most popular type of silk curtain is charmeuse or raw silk.
