Cheap Garage Organization Tips

By | 1 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

If you're like most people, your garage is at least somewhat of a mess. If it's not, either you're in the minority, or else you just recently straightened it up and now it's only a matter of time before it turns into the pseudo chaos which is more the norm than what you see now. However, that doesn't need to be the case. A lot depends on exactly how you go about organizing things. If you're anything like I used to be, it was largely a case of moving piles of stuff into more neatly organized piles of stuff in another corner. Maybe, just maybe, throwing a few things out because I finally came to terms with the fact that now, 20 years after college, there really isn't much reason to keep some of those old classic textbooks that I was sure I would get around to reviewing again, 'just for fun'. Yeah right.

Anyway, if you want to try to get your garage or storage shed or work room organized once and for all, the biggest suggestion I have for you is to come up with some kind of plan. If you think it through from the beginning, you'll have a much greater chance of making some real progress in your organization, and it will more likely be organization that sticks. What am I talking about?

Think about what kinds of things you are storing. Once you figure that out, you can decide more easily what the proper storage containers might be for your needs. For example, are you doing a lot of craft type work that needs a lot of small, easily mixed up and lost pieces? Or maybe you have a lot of use for smaller sized nails and screws in the jobs you do. If so, you'll want to get some smaller containers that you can easily label to hold these items. Some things you might be able able to use are food containers such as margarine or sour cream containers on which you slap a piece of masking tape that you can label. Or, another option might be empty baby food containers. With a good lid and the see-through glass, these are wonderful for storing small things. If you don't currently have a little one at home, there is a good chance you know someone who does who would be more than happy to unload some of the many, many empty baby food jars they have around the house.

If you have larger items you want to put into storage, cardboard moving boxes might be your answer. While you can easily pay a decent amount of money if you buy these new at an office supply store or a moving box store, there really is no need to do so. There are many companies who go through a LOT of computer paper every month, and all that paper arrives in cardboard shipping boxes. If you approach some of these companies (think of mortgage companies, Title companies, Real Estate companies, attorneys etc... all businesses that go through reams of paper) asking if you might be able to take some of their empty boxes that their paper was shipped in, there's a good chance you can get all you need for free. These boxes are usually in very good shape (as opposed to going to a liquor store for their used cardboard boxes, which is still an option, but usually they are more beaten up and dirty).

There are plenty of other everyday items that you can use to help keep the clutter organized in your garage or work space. Things that you may already have around the house, or things you can pick up for very little money. For example, you can use a large plastic garbage can to keep things like sporting goods (bats, balls, hockey sticks and golf clubs) in a single location, not floating all over the garage. Other things such as silverware holders, spice racks and their small, clear bottles can also be put to good use.

Once you think through what you need to organize and how you're going to do it, getting good, inexpensive organizational and/or moving storage boxes like the ones outlined above will have you on the road to a permanently better organized garage, workroom or storage shed.

Out of chaos comes order. While it took many years to break my habits of throwing everything in the garage to 'get to it later', once I started taking the time to think things through from the beginning and knowing there would be a place for everything, my garage (and other areas in my life) got much easier to deal with. From requesting office paper boxes at work to become my  moving boxes instead of using garbage bags, I began to see the light of proper organization. I probably have more cardboard storage boxes neatly lined up in my garage now than anyone I know. But I know where everything is now!  I even have my niece following in my organizational footsteps, but of course she needs to have all pink storage boxes!
