Cheap Kitchen Renovation Ideas

By Edited Jun 26, 2015 4 5

Despite what you may think, renovating your kitchen doesn't need to cost a fortune. In fact, money is no guarantee of success, a cheap kitchen renovation can be as satisfying as a really expensive one as long as you take care of the things that matter to you. Depending on your reasons to renovate the kitchen, you may be looking at as little as $50 to repaint it in a more modern colour, or you could be refinishing your cabinets and countertops for less than $500 if you are skilled at DIY. And what's better, you can just plan your low cost kitchen renovation in stages, and improve it as your wallet allows.

Kitchen Renovation Project On A Tiny Budget

Painting Your Kitchen Is Cheap And Fun
You have no cash, but you really, really, really hate your kitchen. The walls are dark and oppressing and you hate cooking there to the point that you have a loyalty discount at your local takeaway. It's definitely time for a kitchen renovation on a budget! If there is nothing obviously wrong with your kitchen besides the aesthetic elements, a fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference. If you aren't an expert, a semi-gloss later paint is the most forgiving and easy to clean afterwards, but remember to prepare the surfaces beforehand so the paint adheres properly.

All you need to paint your kitchen are some easy to get and affordable tools such as a ladder, paint rollers, brushes, paint trays and painter's tape to ensure the paint stays where it should. Protect the floor with cheap plastic tarps and get the oldest clothes you can find, as you will end up splashing paint on them. And of course, paint. Depending on the size of your kitchen, you will need more or less paint, preferably on a light and neutral colour.

You may want to play with colour and paint a wall in a contrasting colour to liven up the space. Don't forget to clean the walls well beforehand, and prepare them with a primer. Armed with painter's tape, frame all the surfaces you intend on painting to ensure paint stays where it should and you don't end up with a splash on your washing machine, cover the floor with plastic (being careful not to slip)… and go for it. In a few hours your kitchen will be once again modern and welcoming.

Refurbish Your Cabinets And Countertops

If you are after an effective but cheap kitchen renovation, refinishing your cabinets is one of the most effective, as you can increase the storage space and improve the visual appearance of your entire kitchen, while saving the most money. Kitchen cabinets are often the most expensive part of a kitchen, so refurbishing them while they are still in a working condition will keep them that way for longer and prevent water damage and other common problems.

If your kitchen has cheap counters or cabinets whose laminate has started to bubble or tear, it's time to refinish them before the plywood base is damaged. You can do that by cutting and installing countertop laminate sheets yourself. Resurfacing countertops and cabinets is a cheap way of giving your kitchen a totally new look, and extend their useful life.

In order to refinish wood stained cabinets you can use a furniture refinisher to strip off the finish, and use a wood stain in a matching colour to revive the colour or even change it. Apply a new protective coat making sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions, and you are good to go. You will be dealing with flammable, poisonous and stinky chemical substances, so make sure to use a respirator and keep the windows open. If you prefer to use paint to refurbish your cabinets, sand the surface first so the paint sticks and consider using stencils as a cheap way to add a designer touch to your kitchen.

Install A New Kitchen Floor

For the ultimate cheap kitchen renovation, replacing old and worn floors with contemporary vinyl tiles is not only affordable, it will also make your kitchen easier to clean and more comfortable to walk on. Vinyl tiles are great for a variety of reasons, starting with the fact that they are the most affordable flooring option you'll find, come in a seemingly endless variety of colours and patterns and are also one of the best choices for pet friendly flooring due to being water resistant and easy to clean.

Vinyl can be bought online for less than $1 per square meter, and tiles also offer the added benefit of being easy to replace individually if they are damaged. You can install them on almost any surface as long as it's perfectly clean and primed correctly so the adhesive sticks, so if your kitchen has an old wood, linoleum or concrete floor that is beyond repairing, this can be the perfect fix.

Kitchen Solutions To Optimize Your Space

Optimize Your Kitchen Space

One of the reasons people hate their kitchens is that they look crowded and messy. If you have a small kitchen, making good use of the vertical space can make it go from suffocating to airy in no time. Hanging pot racks, lid holders or even adding some open shelves instead of more cabinets is not only cheap, it can make a great difference to how you can use your kitchen. Everything will still be at hand but out of your way, and your kitchen will look modern and stylish.

Some space saving solutions for small kitchens that you may want to investigate are mounted hangers for mugs or kitchen utensils, a foldable table that can be attached to the wall instead of a static one, or even dividers for your drawers so you can enjoy organized storage. Light can also make a big difference, so consider installing low-energy halogen floods instead of hanging lights, and add some under-cabinet lighting to make your kitchen look larger and more inviting. For around $250, you can enjoy a contemporary kitchen that is a pleasure to use and where everything has its place.
