By | Aug 4, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Where do your kids put their sports gear and backpacks when they first walk in the door? Do they actually take them to their rooms and put their stuff away? Probably not. Enter the storage locker. Storage lockers can really make your life easier, and in recent years they have become extremely popular. They are a very functional piece of furniture and can be expensive, especially if you have built-ins made. You can severely decrease the cost of this by making them yourself or buying used lockers.

First, determine the kind of storage you want.

Ask yourself these questions-

  • What would work the best, an open front or a locker with doors?
  • Would a seat be beneficial?
  • Looking to hide the stuff behind doors?
  • How about a cabinet at the top?
  • Wood or metal?

Used metal storage lockers can be found online at places like Craigslist, your local newspaper site, or even Ebay. These are usually sold after being torn out of schools and businesses. They may come in a beat up condition, but they are the easiest kind to makeover. Grab a couple cans of spray paint in unusual colors and turn them into a conversation piece.

A wood cabinet storage locker can be easily constructed using either stock cabinetry, or stock closet shelving. First measure the spot you want to install the storage lockers in. Try to put them in an area close to the door you come in from most. Divide that space into the number of lockers you want to put there. This will give you a maximum width for each locker. Then go to the store to check out your options.

A quick and easy cabinet to use is the unfinished tall utility cabinet. If you don't like the idea of having doors, just don't use them when putting it together. These can be stained or painted to match any interior design. Use classic black or white, or pops of colors to make them stand out. Line 2 or more of these up side by side and you've got yourself an set of cheap storage lockers that look custom made.
