Make Good Use of Storage Units for Rent

If you have too much stuff in your home and need to find storage units for rent, then you should be aware of some good tips on how to use storage units properly and wisely.  Many people need to store things from time to time and finding cheap storage units that are also safe and secure are a great way to temporarily find a home for your excess items.

Here are some tips and hints on renting storage units:

Keep Your Items off the Ground

It’s a good idea to find a way to keep your boxes and other items off the ground when you are storing them in cheap storage units.  This is especially true if your unit is one that the door leads to the outside and not one that is enclosed in a building. It’s quite possible that if it rains really hard or snows, that water could get inside and under the door of an outside storage unit. The way to solve this is to get some wooden pallets and put them down on the floor first, and then stack you things onto these pallets.

Wrap Your Items up in Plastic

Another good tip when renting storage units is to wrap all of your items up in strong plastic or bubble wrap.  This accomplishes several things: first, it protects your things from dirt, dust and water; second it protects it from any bugs or mice, and third it protects it against being damaged if it gets bumped.

Another good idea is to use plastic storage bins instead of cardboard boxes, as this too adds some strength and durability to your storage methods. You can buy large Rubbermaid totes or even use large plastic trash cans as storage methods.

Make Sure You Lock up Your Storage Unit

One of the most important things to do when you are renting storage units is to make sure that you have a secure self-storage unit. Even if the company has its own security, you need to buy a good, strong lock to put on the door. Make sure the lock has a small locking bar so that a thief can’t cut it off with a bolt cutter. Be sure to buy your own lock and not use any provided by the storage company. It is a sad thing, but most robberies of items from storage units were done by unscrupulous employees of the storage company.

Be Sure to Put Labels on Your Boxes

Labeling your boxes will make it much easier for you to find items once you decide to unpack or if you need to get out one or two specific things. You might think that you will remember exactly where you put that can opener or your winter boots, but that isn’t likely if it has been a few months. One great idea is to also hang a list of all the boxes and their contents right inside your unit on the wall for easy reference.

Don’t Forget Weather Changes

One thing many people forget about is that the weather can cause changes that make your storage unit heat up or cool down dramatically. If you have things that can melt in heat like old vinyl records or fragile items like old photos that would be damaged by humidity, then you need to find a way to protect your items accordingly. Some storage places offer special temperature controlled storage units and that is something you may need to consider renting.

Figure Out ahead of Time the Size of Unit to Rent

When renting a storage unit, you need to consider the fact that the bigger the unit, the more expensive it will be to rent it. Therefore, it is a good idea to go through the things you want to store and ensure that you really have a need to store all of it. You can always have a yard sale or give away the items that you can part with and doing so will save you money when choosing a size of room to rent.

It also doesn’t hurt to take a look at the final selection and consider the best ways of fitting it all into your storage unit that will allow you to pack the most stuff. You can use a measuring tape to help you to figure it out. You also should be sure to stack light boxes on top and the heavy ones on the bottom so that things won’t get crushed or broken.

Figure Out When You Will Need Access to Your Storage Unit

Some storage companies are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, but others are not. Be sure that you know when you will need to get inside of your unit and plan accordingly when you decide on a place for renting your storage unit. This goes along with the need to also find secure self-storage units and companies that have 24 hour guards that might also double as the ones who let you in if you need to get to your unit at night.

Buy Insurance for Your Stored Items

You should also buy insurance to protect the items you are storing, especially if anything is valuable or if you are storing something like a car or boat. Even if the storage company has insurance, they may not have enough to totally cover losses and may not cover it for all possible damages or problems. There is actually special storage unit insurance you can buy, so check with your insurance agent for more information.

Storing things either permanently or temporarily is a common practice that many people find that they need to do from time to time. If you find yourself in that situation, then following some or all of the above tips and hints will help you get the best possible outcome when you need to find cheap storage units.
