Cheap and Thoughtful Gifts for Men

By Edited Aug 24, 2014 1 5

Looking for the Perfect Gift for that Special Guy?

Here are dozens of gift ideas to help you!

Men love toys. It is almost a cliché in our society to say that the only difference between men and boys is the size and cost of their toys! Therefore, when you ask your favorite man what he wants for Christmas or his birthday, does he respond with something like, "a new car," "a motorcycle," "a fishing boat," or some similar item that you cannot possibly afford to buy him? If so, you probably shrug your shoulders in frustration and end up getting him another shirt, sweater, or coffee mug. There are other alternative gift ideas for men, though, that will leave both of you happy. What are some things that are within your price range, but will still please him when he opens your gift?

Gifts for the Man You Love

Hobby Gifts

Many men have hobbies, and they always need something new. Does he like to go fly fishing? Buy him a new fishing rod, some flies, or even a kit so he can tie his own flies. How about some new waders, or hand warmers? What about glare reducing sunglasses that help you see clearly while wading in the river.

Is he a hunter? Perhaps a new, warm, and practical hunting jacket or boots would prove helpful. Go to the local sporting goods store, and talk to the salesman about any new items they have that will make these outdoor activities more fun or comfortable. Think of the other things he likes to do when he has a few extra minutes … is he a ham radio operator, a hiker, a photographer or a beachcomber? All of these activities can be even more fun, when you have a few new pieces of equipment to use.

Video Game Gifts

Video games are no longer just for teenagers. Many men of all ages love trying out all the latest video games and computer games. My husband, a former private pilot, has enjoyed practicing takeoffs and landings with a computer flight simulator. Many of the small airports shown on the flight simulator are ones where he has actually landed a plane, and he has really enjoyed testing his reflexes and reliving the experience. He also loves competing with our son-in-laws when they play a wide assortment of video games. If you aren't sure which game would be the most fun, try giving him a gift card from Amazon.com so he can select his own.

There are also Wii games that help guys practice their golf swing on a rainy day, or engage in similar activities.

Board Games

Many men enjoy playing board games with their kids, and these items can be wonderful gifts when they are given by the children to their Dad. If your young children are wondering what they can possibly get their father for his birthday, Christmas, or Father's Day, help them select a board game, jigsaw puzzle, or similar activity that they can enjoy together. The kids will have fun making the selection, and Dad will have a great time playing the game with them.

Sports Gifts for Men

Guys generally like to do things, rather than just look at things. While a woman may love a beautiful item for her wardrobe or home, a man tends to want something he can handle, play with, and use. Does he like to play basketball in the driveway with his buddies? Take a look at his current backboard and basketball. Does either of them need replacing? If you live near the ocean, would he like a skim board, surf board, or snorkeling equipment? When was the last time he bought a new tennis racquet? Does he need new golf shoes, a new soccer ball for his weekly soccer game, or a new team jersey, to replace the old, torn one? Just don't be disappointed if he holds onto the old stuff, too. Sometimes, he'll want to use his old things until they just can't be used any longer. That does not mean that he doesn't like what you got him; he's just saving it! Don't nag … let him enjoy his stuff!

Kitchen Gifts for Men

Yes, many men love to mess around in the kitchen, and they love to have the right equipment. Would the guy you're shopping for enjoy a special coffee maker? How about a rotisserie, grill, juicer or similar items? Many men enjoy making up their own creative fruit smoothies … so a special smoothie blender just for him could be great gift. Does he like to mix drinks? Buy him all the special gadgets he wants to make his cocktails look professional.

Game Tickets Make Great Gifts

You may not be able to afford to buy him season tickets to his favorite sporting events, but you may be able to buy him a pair or two of tickets for some particularly exciting games. Ask some of his friends if there is a game that they think will be especially riveting this season. It doesn't have to be the Super Bowl … just a major local rivalry. What about tickets to a local college game? Texas-OU weekend in Dallas is a major event each year, and people often plan months in advance for the big game. Are there any unusual sporting events that will happen in the next year in your city, or a city nearby? Tickets to World Cup Soccer or the X Games could be the thrill of a lifetime for him.

Sports Memorabilia Gifts for Men

There are some situations in which men can enjoy owning something that is just fun to look at … for example they may love to have an autographed baseball, basketball, football or sports jersey. If they like having friends over to watch the game on TV, they might enjoy having mugs, coasters, posters and other items that display the logos of their favorite teams. For more ideas, and to find out where to purchase many of these items, you may also want to read the article, "Sports Memorabilia Gifts for Men" or try some of the other articles listed at the end of this article.

Music Gifts

Although you may still give a CD to the guy you love, iTunes gift cards can be a greatly appreciated gift, instead, because these gift cards can be used to purchase music, or download apps to their phone or iPad. Don't forget to see if one of their favorite bands will be holding a concert in your city in the coming year. Tickets to a major concert are a fun gift that both of you can enjoy together!

Movies and Television DVDs

Movie passes can be a fun gift that the entire family will enjoy together … especially if you promise to use them to go to the movie that HE chooses. In addition, is there a TV series, such as "Band of Brothers," "The Pacific," or "Dexter" that he would like to watch from beginning to end? You can buy him a complete set of DVD's, usually for under $50, and he can watch his favorite series to his heart's content. Some men also enjoy getting classic cowboy and war movies.

There is no way to list all the possible gifts that the man in your life would really like to have. Hopefully, this article has helped inspire you to think of a good assortment of fun and affordable gifts that he will enjoy. Some of them are items that he might not buy for himself, but that he will really appreciate getting as a gift. You can still throw in a shirt, sweater or coffee mug from time to time, but try some of these other ideas, too. Your guy will love your for thinking of these things, and you should still be able to stay within your shopping budget!

Great article and great ideas! My dad would love some snorkel equipment. Alas, we live in the middle of a prairie.

Thank you both so much! Since we raised four daughters, I used to struggle to think of gift ideas for my husband and our son-in-laws. However, as time has gone by it has gotten a lot easier. Many of the things suggested in this article are exactly the items they have put on their wish lists! The guys in my life were the inspiration for this article.
