It's no easy feat to open a checking account when you have lack-luster credit because not only do banks award checking accounts based on credit history, but they also employ their own credit checking system known as the CheckSystem. CheckSystem will assign a "bank credit score" to a customer, which will then be shared routed along information systems to all banks. If your account has ever been in the negative, or you've failed to make a payment, etc.

Your first step is to obtain your credit report, you need an official copy, and ensure that all of the information on your credit report is correct.

Even the most minuscule discrepancies can play havoc with your credit score, so you have to get these corrected in order to improve your chances of getting a bank account with bad credit.

You can use a prepaid debit card, the card is affixed to your bank account, in lieu of a credit card; it's a good idea to initially put $100 on your prepaid debit card because this is also usually the amount of money required to open the account.

Using direct deposit of your paychecks can also help you get an account at a big bank if you have bad credit. You'll probably need to go to your human resources director to have your paycheck direct deposited in your bank once you get your account started up.

What you'll end up with is an account that will act like a regular checking account, but you can only have so many transactions.

If regular banks aren't willing to work with you, then you should check about getting an account with an online bank; even though you will be required to put up more money initially, the standards for credit are lower. So, you can find plenty of online banks like this that will allow you a checking account with bad credit. You should always do a good amount of research though, just to make sure that you're getting the possible deal, and the best offers with your online bad credit bank account.

Second chance bank accounts are also offered online as well as at certain physical banks, and these second chance bank accounts are specially set up for those customers with less than perfect credit report scores. You can often find second chance checking accounts on the internet, and they are a good way for someone with bad credit to have a bank account.

It is possible to obtain a checking account with bad credit, but it does require some dedication and perseverance; you have to consider everything, and if one way isn't successful, then try something else.
