Chiropractic Pillows for Neck Pain

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 1 2

A chiropractic pillow is often prescribed to people with chronic back and neck pain. If you've ever been in a chiropractors office, you may have noticed a display of pillows. The shape of these pills might look funny to you, but they are proven to work to reduce neck pain along with common sleep problems such as snoring or sleep apnea.

What some people talk about chiropractic pillows they are referring to any kind of pillow that supports the neck while cradling the head. They tend to be more firm than the standard pillows that you buy in stores. These pillows may be made out of foam, buckwheat hulls or softer materials. Some even use air or water for support. They can range in price from $20 to over $100. Everyone has different health requirements and preferences, so it can take some time to find the perfect chiropractic pillow.

About the Chiropractic Pillow

When other people say chiropractic pillow they have a particular kind of pillow in mind. This is a design that many chiropractors feel will best reduce the strain and stress on neck muscles. The chiropractic pillow has firm edges and soft middle. One edge is fairly wide while the other one is more narrow. This helps accommodate both side sleepers and back sleepers and recognizes that having a pillow that supports just one sleep style is insufficient. This has firm foam that supports the neck no matter how you lay.

If you've seen memory foam pillows before, you might think a chiropractic pillow is the same thing. While they are similar, they are not exactly the same. An important distinction between the two is that chiropractic pillows use firm foam on the edges and a softer material in the middle. A memory foam pillow uses the same material for the whole pillow.

Another difference between memory foam pillows and chiropractic pillows is the type of foam that is used. Memory foam pillows contour to the shape of your head. In a chiropractic pillow the foam is more firm. Most people find that memory foam is more comfortable. For people who need a lot of neck support, however, the chiropractic pillow is often a better purchase.

Adjusting to a Chiropractic Pillow

If you currently sleep on something soft and fluffy, you'll be in for a surprise when you switch to a chiropractic pillow. If you've never slept on one before you'll probably find it uncomfortable. In fact, it might even make you neck pain worse if you make a sudden switch. But don't worry. Once you get used to it you'll find it impossible to switch back.

You may want to try adjusting to it gradually. One way to do this is to buy an extra firm pillow. These tend to be softer than chiropractic pillows but they offer more support than their soft counterparts. You can use them as a stepping stone so you don't stress your neck too much in one night. You may want to sleep on this new extra firm pillow for a week or two before you move on to a chiropractic model.

Where to Buy Chiropractic Pillows for Neck Pain

There are a couple different options if you're looking to purchase a chiropractic pillow for neck pain. One of the most obvious places to look is at your chiropractors office. Many chiropractors sell the pillows they think are best for their patients. Of course there are a few disadvantages to buying a neck pain pillow from a chiropractor. Due to limited space they often can't have a wide variety of models. While they may sell their favorites, every person's needs are different.

Another possible problem is cost. Some chiropractors only carry the most expensive models and they may mark up their products higher than what you would pay if you could get them from other sources. This isn't saying that the chiropractors are all being greedy. It is just that they have higher overhead costs to account for and little retail space.

While memory foam pillows are popular enough to be carried at major retailers such as Walmart and Target, few places sell chiropractic pillows for neck pain. The people who live in small towns are out of luck if they're looking to buy one in a retail store. You may be able to find them in bedding stores, but even there they aren't common.

Your best bet for purchasing a chiropractic pillow is online. There are many internet stores that specialize in selling pillows for neck pain. They have a wide variety available in several different price ranges. You can also find chiropractic pillows at major online retailers such as Amazon.

Other Pillows to Consider

While a chiropractic pillow is one the best on the market for alleviating neck pain, it isn't the only one. Depending on your needs and preferences you may prefer buckwheat pillows, a memory foam pillow, or a water pillow. All of these will provide you with the necessary support that you need. You will get a good nights sleep and wake up without being stiff and sore.

The water pillow is the one kind of pillow I haven't tried, but I think it would be really comfortable.
