Choosing The Right Sink for Both Form and Function
The type and style of sink you choose for the rooms in your home can help set the look for that room. In some cases the sink is a generic piece the blends into the background, but if you want to create a distinct look the sink can play a big role in this.
Types of Sinks
For starters you may want to decide what type of sink you prefer, both from a functional standpoint and from an aesthetic standpoint. There are self-rimming or top mount sinks, undermount sinks, vessel sinks or farm sinks to name a few.
Each of these sinks has its advantages and disadvantages, and some of them lend themselves better to a certain style or room of the house. Top mount sinks are, as they sound, mounted from the top. They are placed into a prepared hole in the countertop and they have a rim that sits over the counter. They are generally easier to install than some other sinks.
Undermount sinks are mounted underneath. They require more work and skill to install, but they provide a clean contemporary look as their is no rim, the countertop drops right into the sink.
Vessel sinks are a bowl shape that sits on the countertop. They come in many styles, glass, metal or ceramic to name a few. They provide a distinct look, but they are mostly used in the bathroom.
A farm sink is a a deep, often large sink with a front that is finished. This front remains visible when the sink is installed. These sinks are mainly used in the kitchen. They can provide a rustic look.
Choosing the Right Look
The type and material of the sink you choose will often help set the tone for the room when you choose a distinct style. For instance a copper farm sink will help provide a warm, rustic look to a kitchen, a vessel sink with a colored glass bowl and colored countertop can help provide an art deco or contemporary look in your bathroom.
There are a number of styles from which to choose, especially if you choose a sink and countertop separately. The possibilities are countless.
The main thing is to make sure you like the functionality of the sink you are choosing because you will likely be using it a lot, whether it is a copper apron sink in your kitchen or a pedestal sink in your bathroom. The right combination of functionality and aesthetic appeal will help complete the room.
