Choosing a Hypoallergenic Dog

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

President Obama and his family made a smart decision when they took in a Portuguese Water Dog, "Bo", as the White House first pet. The Portugues Water dog was a gift from family friend Senator Ted Kennedy, but more importantly it's considered a hypoallergenic dog breed. Barack Obama's daughter has issues with dog allergies and that makes this pet dog a smart choice for them so she won't be suffering from those issues. If you have find yourself sneezing in the company of a canine at a friend or relative's home, you most likely have some degree of dog allergy intolerance. This can be a frustrating issue, especially if you have a fondness for dogs and want one as your family pet. Luckily, certain dogs have been breed that are more friendly for those who suffer from allergies.

Genrally the issue with dog allergies is caused by dogs shedding and their hair particles coming in contact with dust. The term "hypoallergenic dog" is a bit misleading, because no dog is truly hypoallergenic. However, some breeds of dogs are more suitable to be around if you find yourself sneezing or itching as a result of them. Rather than putting up with a dog that is causing you issues, you may want to find one that you can co-exist with happily. These dogs will generally have less hair, shorter hair, single-layer coats or no hair at all. Many of these breeds of dogs will also shed less, making them easier to clean up after.

The best advice for choosing a hypoallergenic dog is to visit the breeder where the particular dog you're interested in is located. Spend at least 15 minutes or more around the animal to see how you react to it. You may even want to bring a towel or article of clothing you don't wear so often to rub against the dog's coat. Bring that home and leave it in an area near you to determine if it causes you to develop allergy symptoms. If you find that you're able to deal with the particular hypoallergenic dog and aren't experiencing any allergic reactions, that may be the ideal pet for you. If you find yourself irritable with sneezing and lots of itching, it's probably best to consider another pet dog.

Don't feel that you can't experience the joys of being a pet dog owner. There are plenty of breeds of hypoallergenic dogs available to choose from. Select the most allergy-free dog you can, and enjoy the benefits that these four-legged friends bring to many people's lives.
