Choosing a Powder Brush

By | May 29, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

In today's cosmetic market, there are an incredible amount of choices for everything. Usually people find a makeup brand that they love, works with their skin and is in their budget. However, there are still more decisions that need to be made before you can use your favorite makeup. What kind of brushes do you need to best apply the makeup and give you the best look? When looking specifically at powder brushes, there are a few things to keep in mind when finding the perfect brush.

Powder brushes are available in three basic shapes: dome, blunt, and slant. Dome shaped brushes are large, fluffy brushes and can be the best choice when looking for even application and complete coverage. A blunt brush is smaller than the typical dome brush. The bristles of a blunt brush are very dense; this will apply makeup in a concentrated area. Finally, the slant brush is the smallest size brush with a slanted tip. This brush is best suited for precise makeup application like eye shadow or highlighter.

When you have decided on the shape of brush that is best suited to your needs, you should then consider what bristle type you prefer. There are two general categories of bristles. These are synthetic and natural. Synthetic powder brush bristles are man made and usually easier to care for and often last longer than natural bristles. These bristles can often be softer and much less expensive.

Natural bristle brushes usually are much more expensive, but many experts insist they provide better application. Natural bristles are of animal origin. Badger hair bristles can be stiffer and are generally used to apply defined makeup like eyeliner or eyebrow powder. Pony hair bristles are often used in shadow and blush brushes. They are soft and usually provide a large dome shape. Pony bristles can also be moistened for a dramatic look.

Used mainly in shadow or highlighting brushes, short squirrel hair helps to soften the any colors into your skin. One of the top types of bristles are made of goat's hair. Because this type of hair is readily available in many lengths and textures and are readily available, quality brushes can be produced at lower costs than other natural bristle brushes.

Finally, when shopping for brushes, try them out in the store, feel the bristles and rub them against your hand. You shouldn't feel any scratchy pieces and you shouldn't see any bristles falling out of the head of the brush. When you have them home, take care of your brushes by cleaning them according to the package directions and they should last several years before needing replacement.
