Choosing an Alarm Clock for Those With a Hearing Loss
Most of us wake each morning to the sound of an alarm. Whether we have an alarm clock, a clock radio, or a cell phone with an alarm, we depend on that annoying sound or our favorite tunes to get us out of bed in time for work, school, or important appointments. However, for those who have a significant hearing loss, the typical alarm clock may not do the job.
There are a few options that are worth consideration for these individuals. One option is an extra loud alarm. Sonic Boom for instance has an alarm that is as loud as 113dB. Of course, every one in the house and perhaps next door may also be awakened with this type of device.
Another option is an alarm clock that provides visual signals such as a flashing light. These often plug into a bedside lamp to create this signal. Certainly this type of device won't disturb people in another room or an adjacent apartment.
Using a similar concept, gradual light alarm clocks are another possibility. They are not designed for the purspose of accommodating people with a hearing loss, but in some instances they work well. Many of these alarm clocks also use a lamp in the room to gradually increase lighting in order to wake someone. If the light fails to wake them over a set period of time, an audible alarm sounds. Alarm clocks with these visual signals work well for some people, but not all
A third option that is popular for those with a hearing loss are vibrating pillow alarm clocks. These devices allow the user to place a small vibrator under their pillow. When the alarm goes off, it begins vibrating. This type of device shouldn't disturb anyone outside of the room, and in many cases, won't even wake a sleeping spouse who has their head on a different pillow.
Choosing the right alarm clock of course depends upon the degree of hearing loss, a person's living situation, and how soundly they sleep.
