Choosing and Hanging Curtain Rails

By Edited Aug 21, 2015 0 0

There are many reasons why draperies are used within our homes. Whatever the reason you may decide to hang draperies, you first must have something to hang them on. This is where curtain rails come in handy. There are many different types of these tracks available, each designed for a specified purpose and use.

You will find many different rails for curtains while shopping for the ones that best fit in your home. A few examples of some of these may include plastic or metal curtain rails. Plastic, aluminum, and nylon tracks are often used because they provide strength, are light weight, and are versatile. One of the factors that you need to consider when choosing which one is right for you is whether or not it is long enough for the window, and whether or not it is strong enough to hold the weight of the draperies that you intend to hang.

Another thing that you may need to consider would be the type of window that you are trying to fit with the tracks. An example of this would be if you have a bay window. If this is the case then you would need to find tracks that can be bent around the shape of the bay. A good track for your bay window can be found in plastic, aluminum, or nylon. This is because not only are they flexible materials but they also can be cut very easily. Another benefit to this type of track is they are inexpensive to purchase.

After you have chosen the tracks that you want to use, you then need to know how to attach them. Most tracks will come with enough brackets, screws, and plugs to get the job done. A choice that you need to make is if you want to attach the rail to the window or to the wall above the window, it is often recommended that you attach it to the wall itself. The first step is to drill the wall at regular intervals and then insert the anchor plugs. It is recommended that you attach a batten above the window, which allows for easier drilling if the wall is too hard. You will fix the batten on both sides of the window with screws and you can even glue the center. Next you will fit the brackets for your track to the batten by drilling pilot or screw starter holes along the batten at regular intervals. The last thing that you want is crooked tracks so it is highly recommended that you use a spirit level to make sure that everything is straight.

After you have hung your curtain rails you can then hang your curtains. Now it's time to sit back and enjoy the benefits of your draperies.
