Choosing the Right Dog Crate
If this is the first time you have ever owned a dog you may well find yourself a little confused, or bemused at least with what type of dog crate you should get, or even if you really need a dog cage.
There are actually quite a few very good reasons for purchasing a dog cage or crate to use with your new puppy. One of the main reasons people buy a dog crate is so they can housetrain their new puppy. It's been time proven, that crate training a pup so that they will only do their 'business' outside really does work. It is one of the fastest and simplest ways to do it.
Another good reason for investing in a crate or dog cage is that it will give your puppy a place to call home, and his own little den he can go to when it's time for him to rest, or when the world gets too overwhelming for him. Most dogs grow to really love their little sanctuary.
Of course, it goes without saying that if you're planning to travel with your pup you definitely need a travel crate or cage, as allowing a dog to be loose in the car (especially a young puppy) while you are driving is just asking for trouble. Not only will they get underfoot, but it ends up being quite dangerous to try to control a pup while driving. Another good reason to put your pup in a crate while travelling is that in the event he gets carsick (which happens fairly frequently) it will be easy to clean up and take care of.
Even if you are staying at home all the time, there will be sometimes when you won't be able to keep an eye on your pup. Maybe you have to run down to the shop or do other outside errands. Rather than leaving your dog in the home loose all day, it is far better to restrain them in their dog cage, at least until you can safely trust them to be by themselves when you are not there.
Even if your dog is primarily living outside, there are still times such as when you travel that you need a crate. You might need to allow your dog to come inside sometimes too, for example if there's bad weather or a storm and your dog is afraid, or perhaps he's sick or recovering from some type of surgery and you need to keep an eye on him. It's much easier to do this if you can restrain him in a cage or a pen for the time he's inside, especially at times when you can't be with him.
There really are a lot of good reasons why you should buy a cage or crate for your dog, especially when he's a puppy. While you may not need to use it all the time, it is the sort of thing that is much better to have and not need, than to need but all of a sudden find out you don't have.
