When its time to go to college and move into your new dorm, the most important thing to consider is what furniture you will need. There are three main variables you need consider. Namely, how large you dorm is, your room mate and your personal needs. By giving these factors enough thought you will be able to buy a set of dorm furniture that will serve you well while you are studying and partying.

1. What are your needs?

Dorms by design don't normally have much room. The best way to make use of this space is to think about what you really need. You will require space for your personal items like hair curling irons and makeup, and space for you to study. A good idea is to make a list of what you need and then cut this list down to the bare essentials. This shortened list can be the starting point for your shopping trip.

2. Set a budget

It is important that you set a budget and stick to it. Becoming a student can be a financial challenge at times and the last thing you want to do is blow any spare money you have at the start. Think about cheap options such as a twin air mattress for a spare bed when friends stay over. There are other items you will need to buy including text books, study materials and other college essentials. Remember that you will really only need the furniture for about 4 years, after which you can sell them to the next college student.

3. Ask your room mate

Most dorms will have you living with a second person. This means you need to think about the other person in the room. They may have furniture that you maybe able to share like televisions, stereos and a computer. As you will be living with this person for months, you don't want to clash over anything including the look of the furniture. Consider their tastes and see if you can get agreement of the furniture you will be bringing.

4. Set the look

Think about what colors and styles you want to have in your dorm room. You need a look that will help you study but won't be so boring that you won't enjoy the fun of college. Remember to consult your room mate as you could risk offending them with your personal taste in color or decorations.
