Energy Company Reviews

Finding the best electricity supplier to suit your household can be a difficult process, especially as many energy suppliers offer a variety of deals and tariffs. Researching the available energy providers helps you to find the right deal to suit your needs. If you want to switch to a new electricity provider, but are unsure of which supplier to choose, Scottish Power could be the right choice for you.

Scottish Power

This is one of the largest energy companies in the UK, supplying gas and electricity to millions of homes and businesses. In addition to supplying energy, Scottish Power offers a boiler and radiator maintenance service, with cover options available for those who want to insure against future breakdown and repair costs. Scottish Power also currently has a home insulation offer, which provides free loft and cavity wall insulation for some customers. To qualify for the home insulation offer, customers must be in receipt of certain state benefits.

Scottish Power Tariffs

The Scottish Power Standard Domestic tariff is a variable rate tariff, which means that the unit price of your gas and electricity could fluctuate. There is no fixed term contract for this price plan and you can cancel your supply at any time, without incurring any cancellation fees. In the event of a price increase, you will be given at least one months notice, enabling you to switch to another tariff, or another supplier, if you find a better deal.

There are several options available for the standard tariff. You can choose whether or not to pay a standing charge. If you pay a standing charge for your energy supply, you will receive lower unit rates for your energy. However, light users may benefit from choosing higher unit rates, with no standing charge, as you will only pay for the energy that you use.

You can also choose whether to manage your account online or offline. If you choose the online option, you may be able to claim a discount. In addition, you can receive a discount for paying by Direct Debit, as well as a special Prompt Payer discount if you pay your bills within a set time frame.

The Online Energy Saver price plan is a variable rate tariff, with a 6.3% discount on the standard energy unit rates until July 2014. To qualify for this discount, you must use the online account management facility to keep track of your usage and bills. The Online Energy Saver is only available for dual fuel or electricity customers, and payments must be made online or by Direct Debit.

If you choose to switch to another supplier before the end of your contract, you will need to pay a cancellation fee of £25 per fuel. However, you will not need to pay this fee if you switch to another Scottish Power tariff. You can receive several discounts with this tariff, including a dual fuel, Prompt Payer and Direct Debit discount.

The Online Fixed Price Energy plan is a fixed price tariff, with the unit price of your gas and electricity frozen until September 2014. This protects you against future price hikes for the duration of your contract, and provides peace of mind for many people. This tariff is only available for dual fuel or electricity customers. In order to qualify for this tariff, you must pay by Direct Debit and manage your account online. A cancellation fee applies if you choose to switch supplier before the end of your contract.

The Fixed Price Energy plan is available for those who prefer to manage their account offline, rather than through the online account management facility. This tariff offers fixed prices until January 2016, with an annual discount available for dual fuel customers. This tariff is only available for dual fuel or electricity customers. You will need to pay a cancellation fee of £25 per fuel if you want to switch to another supplier before the end of your contract.

If you are considering using Scottish Power as your electricity supplier, you could receive several discounts, including discounts for prompt payments, Direct Debit payments and dual fuel discounts. In addition, you may be able to claim a further discount if you manage your account online.
