Chris' Zombie Guide to Defensible Positions - Big 5 Sporting Goods

By Edited Apr 2, 2016 0 0

The strip mall you are in should have a few good places to checkout. You'll want to make sure to weigh your escape options before making your way into any building. Being that you will be on foot, you need to be very particular about what you carry in your pack. It would be different if you had a car. Hey, look over there - a used car dealership!

Ok, so we discussed McDonald's the last time. This time we are talking about Big 5 because it is likely that one of these are somewhere nearby in the strip mall that you are at. It would definitely be worth your time to check this place out.
Safety and Security
If you manage to get in one of these places, there is a good chance that others have gotten in before you, especially zombies. So be careful! The first thing you need to do is temporarily block the hole or door you just came in came in from. Next, you will need to sweep the sales floor before checking out the back room and closets. From a first glance, this may look like a good place to stay: there are bars on the windows and doors, and the rear door appears adequate with the dead bolt. Up above, there are false ceiling tiles that gives way to the t-bars in the crawl space. There is no running water but there seems to be quite a bit of supplies you can gather for yourself.
Resources
You may find that quite a bit, if not all, of the rifles and shotguns could be missing along with the ammunition. If you do manage to find something, you'll need to find the keys to the safety locks or a way to remove them without damaging the firing mechanism. Also, these weapons will do you no good without ammunition. You can, however, find other supplies that would help with your survival. Among other things you may be able to find: cutting utensils, camping and hiking gear, fishing and hunting kits, self-defense weapons, and some non-perishable goods. While you won't be able to stay here long, you could certainly stay longer here than McDonald's.
Long Term Solution
I personally wouldn't want to be on the ground floor of any location unless it was built like a fortress. My first goal would be to devise a strategy to built multiple layers of defenses between me and the front and rear entrances. If I do stay, I would also need to develop an efficient way to get through those layers of protection when I need to leave and return to this place.
