Where To Begin

Figuring out what your starting point is going to be is most of the problem. After you have finished assessing the clutter in your room, start sorting the items. Most people will say that they just start picking things up randomly, but the most effective way to clean is to first sort all of the items and then pick them up. This gives you an idea of where things need to go, and what things need to be thrown away. For instance, laundry needs to go in the laundry basket, papers need to go in the filing cabinet, etc. Start with everything that is cluttered on the floor and create specific piles for each item. Then, start with what may be on counters or table tops and do the same thing. After you have finished sorting all of your items, you will be ready to start the pick up process. 

Picking Up

Start picking up all of the items from each individual pile. For example, you might want to start by picking up all of the laundry and putting it in the hamper. Don't start washing the laundry yet, though. Make sure to completely pick up all of the items in your room before you start the cleaning process. 


Finally, the cleaning part begins. First, you want to focus on cleaning up and organizing desks, counter tops, and other furniture. Air Freshening

Probably the most important and last step of your cleaning process is to leave the room smelling nice and fresh! You might choose to light a scented candle or incense. This is a great way to relax after you have worked so hard. You may also want use a freshener such as Febreze to help prevent odd pesky odors from sticking in your room. Spray it on the carpet and all of the fabrics in your room. Then, kick back and relax, enjoy the clean, organized room that you have just created, but don't make another mess and undo all of the hard work you have just done!


Cleaning a house can be a lengthy endeavor. However, if  you work at it slowly every day, you are bound to have more success than if you rushed and cleaned the entire house all in one day. People who gradually clean their house are also more likely to keep it clean by establishing weekly rituals.
