Cold Weather Clothing

Just because the weather is cold outside doesn't mean you need to be (or plan to be) any less active, right? The thing is, most people really hate to be cold, so the natural tendency is for outdoor activity levels to go down as the days get shorter and so does the mercury on the thermometer outside. The thing is, if you dress properly and plan for the colder weather, you can remain pretty comfortable in just about any type of conditions out there. And with today's ever increasingly technological fabrics for both outerwear as well as winter underwear (and everything in between), layering up to stay warm and dry doesn't even need to be super bulky. That's right, you won't necessarily look like the Michelain Man when you go out to play this winter!

There are a few fabrics that have made a huge difference for people who enjoy the outdoors but who still have to plan against cold weather. At least as far as I'm concerned, the two greatest advances in cold weather gear are polar fleece and Gortex. They have both been around for a while, and while Gortex is a name brand, there are many other similar fabrics out there today. The main idea is that they allow you to stay dry when the weather is wet, yet they still allow you to 'breathe' through them. In other words, it's not like you're wearing a giant rubber suit that you'll sweat to death in, even if it's cold outside. Instead, you are able to let heat and perspiration from your body escape as needed, yet the rain or snow (and wind, for that matter) won't get through to you. Polar fleece works in a similar fashion in that you will stay warm, the fabric itself is lightweight, and it will wick moisture away from your body, keeping you dry. This is essential if you want to stay comfortable in cold weather; stay dry from the outside, and stay dry from the inside, pulling sweat away from your body. If your body is wet, especially from perspiration from heavy activity, and then you stop that activity, you're very likely to cool down extremely fast. In fact, if you're not careful, you can find yourself going for hot and sweaty to hypothermic ina very short amount of time, and this is a very dangerous situation.

Whether it's a hat to keep your head warm or thermal socks to keep your feet warm and dry, or anything in the middle, with today's outerwear for cold weather, you have no excuse not to get out there and enjoy the outdoors!

As an avid outdoorsman, the winter is not going to keep me indoors.  At the same time, I hate being cold; especially my feet!  While there have been all kinds of advances in outerwear, footwear and underwear everywhere... I still think one of the best, most important pieces of equipment to get that is most often overlooked is a good pair of thermal socks.  With good socks, your feet will stay warm and dry.  Without them... you're day may very well be miserable!  Good winter socks make all the difference in the world.  Learn more about them at http://thermalsocks.org
