College apartments are not often thought of as places for finding high design practices, especially when the students do not have much to spend on their home. College apartment decorating ideas have to be cheap, functional, and often easy to leave behind, all while having some sense of aesthetics.

College Apartment Decorating Ideas : Window Coverings

Curtains can be expensive but not having them can make a room feel cold, not to mention the lack of privacy without them. Twin bed flat sheets can be used just as easily and can be found much cheaper. The curtain rod can slip easily through the top of the sheet or can be quickly folded over and sewn to make a sleeve for the rod. You could even find a patterned sheet to add color, or the appearance of texture, to the room.

College Apartment Decorating Ideas : Wall Décor

Often a college apartment will not allow students to attach items to the wall. Find picture hanging strips or Velcro strips that can be used to attach items to the wall and easily removed later. Posters are much cheaper to purchase than paintings or other wall décor. Instead of just taping them to the wall, place them in a cheap plastic frame for more effect.

College Apartment Decorating Ideas : Floor Coverings

Floor coverings can be important in college apartments with dirty carpets or cold wood or tile floors. A cheap rug can be an accent piece as well as add warmth to a room or cover a large stain. Look at garage sales for area rugs or ask your friends and family for hand-me-downs.

College Apartment Decorating Ideas : Furniture

Furniture can be the most expensive aspect of decorating a college apartment. Again, ask for hand-me-downs from family who may want to get rid of an extra couch or bed. Keep an eye on local online sites, like craigslist, for cheap, or even free, furniture. Flea markets, and garage sales, are other great places to pick up cheap furniture like end tables or bookcases. Another option is to ask your apartment manager. They may have furniture you can use that was left behind by previous tenants. Don’t forget double duty furniture such as a pull-out couch that can double as a guest bed, or ottomans that can be used as end tables, foot stools, and as extra seating.
