There are so few times in life where a woman gets to wear a formal dress. A formal dress is always exciting. It's a chance to look like a princess or a movie star for just one day, just a few hours. Because of those few times, it's really important to find the perfect dress. One of those occasions is the prom. The best prom, wedding and evening dresses size 16 and up are always ones that flatter the figure, but also are stylish, contemporary and sexy. Finding a prom dress that fits is one part of the process, but another part is finding the best color and style of dress that works with individual coloring and figure.

Choosing colors isn't as hard as it seems, it's simply a matter of knowing what colors suit your hair, eye and skin coloring. If you're shopping at a local department store, it's just a matter of holding up colors and looking in the mirror. If your face, skin and eyes seem brighter, than the color is right for you.

If you're shopping online. finding the perfect color of dress can be complicated. If you're unable to see how a dress looks on, you may not pick the best color. There are a few guidelines that can help with that choice.

Redheads in the brighter colors like orange, and some auburn hair colors with lighter colored green or hazel eyes look best in bright muted colors. These colors are magenta, olive green, navy blue and browns.

Wholesome colors and pastels are perfect for women with fairer skin, and hair colors in the dirty blonde and light color brown hair. Colors like robins egg blue, cyan, and lavender are the perfect accents for these skin and hair colors.

Really bright vibrant colors are perfect for dark skinned women, or black and dark brown haired women with whiter skin and really light eyes. Colors like neon green, hot pink and royal blue are beautiful with this skin, hair and eye color.

Two things to remember:

When purchasing any evening dresses size 16 or wedding dresses size 16, remember that not all designers are created equal when it comes to size. Although there are many designers that are creating some fantastic dresses, you'll want read their size charts to make sure their dress sizes match your measurements. You may be surprised to learn that your dress size is smaller or bigger, depending on designer.

Lastly, check in the mirror with various shades of colors to see which tones match your skin color, if you're unable to go to a department store and try the dresses on.
