I jumped at the chance to go to the Comedy Off Broadway Club in Oakland, CA. This place is located in the beautiful Jack London Square plaza. Most nights are nice enough to see the lights clearly reflect off of the water--this was one of those nights. The venue was held in the Regatta Room at Miss Pearl's Waterfront Hotel.

My wife and I had a great time. We were joined by quite a few relatives and friends. In total, we were rolling 11 deep. When we got to the show, the room was already showing signs of capacity. I took the initiative to grab some spare seats scattered throughout the room. Eventually, extra chairs were brought in but it sure made for a tight fit. It was nice to see so many people out that night for stand-up comedy.

We were there to watch our cousin, Lilibeth Helson. I must admit, she is very funny. She has a joke for everyone and I was quite surprised at how naturally she performed in from of so many people in the audience—she is really good at what she does. After the show, we decided to find a place to eat. There were certainly many places to eat but we decided to go across the street from the hotel to the Home of Chicken and Waffles Restaurant and Bar. Chicken and waffles, mmmmm, delicious!

At the restaurant, we were served promptly with friendly service. My wife found out immediately that a single plate was more than enough food for the both of us. The chicken and waffles cost around $18--we ordered only one plate. During the meal, multiple servers accommodated everything from drink refills to last-minute order requests--we definitely recommend "Home of Chicken and Waffles" to anyone who happens to be in the neighborhood but be sure to bring an appetite 'cause you're going to need it!

Fortunately, even the parking was within walking distance from the restaurant. As we walked across the street to return to our car, we were casually greeted by a patrolling Oakland police officer--you can say he was doing his own cruising through the neighborhood. The parking lot was adequately lit and we had no problems getting to our car--and without incident.

For January, we experienced mild weather not common for this time of the year. Oakland is a beautiful place filled with wonderful people; I encourage you and your friends to drop by whenever you get a chance.
